SS-Division "Handschar" photos
Re: Some SS "Handschar" photo-infos
Regarding the photo I find odd and what exactly doesn't seem right to me: look at the fezzes (the shape, and the position of insignia) and the faces. They just don't seem to match (and that's also what all those fake photos I mentioned look like). They look like photomontages.
Cheers,
Ivan

This man must be over 50 or more.

He indeed wasn't young. As the original caption says, he's an old WWI participant (the woman is his wife). The initial source of the photo is Wiener Illustrierte from 24 May 1944.Arto O wrote:This man must be over 50 or more.

From the new kriegsberichter archive:
Top:
Division troops in the field. A rare look into the combat appearance of the division members in the field (as opposed to the propaganda shoots in garrison with SS troopers all sporting fezzes). This photo may fall into the same sequence as the first combat photograph
discovered. http://forum.axishistory.com/download/f ... 304860&t=1
Possible unit is I/28.
Actual caption:
"SS-Freiwillige aus Bosnien un der Herzegowina im Kampf um ihre Heimat.
Jede Deckung wrd ausgenutzt. Im Schutze von Weidenbäumen gehen die bosnischen und herzegowinischen SS-Freiwilligen zum Angriff auf die bolschewstischen Banden vor."

Halal
Halal is the Muslim version of kosher. Same rules, no pork and beef must be from the upper half of the cow. No loin or but.Ivan Ž. wrote:Zlatni ljiljan wrote:...but I doubt he was interested to go for visit in sausage factory...
Yes, it is hard not to recognize Grand-mufti, but i didn't write "sausage factory"
The caption in this magazine claimed that Grand-mufti is checking if sausages for "Handschar"
are prepared in halal-way (what is "halal", i don't know...?),
and that photo was taken in Sarajevo, 1944. (their mistake)

Does anyone know how many times Mufti al-Husayni visited Division Handschar? And on what dates?

2nd row, 2nd from the left (with his fez accidentally moved to his left) is Husein Djozo. Front row, far right possibly Heinrich Gaese.

Thank you Ivan

Hi
The Ostubaf have been identified as Franz MATHEIS (see the SS & Polizei section). Now the more difficult is to identify the Stubaf. Surely another volksdeutsche (black collar).

Phil, some details still need to be confirmed regarding the Matheis ID. Most of all, the rank.
The reduced quality version of the photo is really annoying to look at and to work with, so here's the original variant from the same source.

Many pictures of Handschar can be found at this web site:

And here's one contribution from my family's album: taken during the training of unit in Germany. Third from the left standing is my uncle Sulejman (father's brother), who went missing in action during fighting in Eastern Bosnia.
