Source: The Panzers and the Battle of Normandy, Georges Bernage. This book has some really good information about Tratnik.

Thanks!

Could you post that info?

It's scattered around in the book so that would be hard. I can recommend the book though, Tratnik was severly wounded when his tank was hit. He lost his ability to speak and had to learn it again by a nurse. Luckily she was German, Tratnik knew French, German and Slovene before his tank was hit.

Best regards/ Daniel

When Štajerska was occupied it was considered German and was annexed to Reich - that's way, Germans mobilized Slovenes into Army.

You're not alone - in wishing this.

Probably my "Diplomska naloga" will be on "Slovenes in W-SS" or "Slovenia and W-SS".

K.Kocjancic wrote:The number 600 Slovenes comes from Dežman's research (Dežman is one of the most recognized historians in Slovenia). He is researching German mobilization of Slovenes to German army between 1941-45.

So far, I don't know that was he thinking of, when he revealed this number (just Slovenes or all W-SS members from Slovenia). If he was thinking about Slovenes, then I have here good 1/6 of them.
The number 600 comes from Žnidarič's research, not from Dežman's. It does not refer to Slovenia but to Slovene Styria only. It does not refer to members of Waffen-SS from Slovene Styria in WWII either but to men from Slovene Styria in German army (including Waffen-SS) by the end 1941/beginning 1942.

In 2001 a book on mobilisation of Slovenes in German army was published. Jože Dežman presented his work on mobilisation in the occupied territory Gorenjska (Carniola) and Koroška (Carinthia). Marjan Žnidarič presented his work on mobilisation in the occupied territory Štajerska (Slovene Styria).

Žnidarič analyzed information sent by most of municipalities in Untersteiermark (Slovene Styria enlarged) on men who volunteered in German army by the end 1941/beginning 1942. They were 511 of whom 50 were members of Waffen-SS. Considering those municipalities that didn't sent data or data were lost Žnidarič raised the number 511 to over 600 men. Some of them were not volunteeres but were German citizens who were called up. The estimated 600 men consisted of mostly Germans by nationality and of undefined men belonging to those Slovenes who had joined ethnic Germans' community for mostly economic reasons. Volunteers were 1 in 1937, 1 in 1938, 10 in 1939.

Dežman wrote that only a small number of Slovenes volunteered to Waffen-SS. However, since 1943 some were forced to join Waffen-SS.

Ludvik Puklavec who was active in association of Slovenes called up in German military service during WWII estimated that several hundred men from Slovenia were members of Waffen-SS.

It is true that Štajerska was considered German but was not formaly annexed to Reich. Yugoslav citizens of the occupied Slovene Styria were given German citizenship which was permanent for ethnic Germans and conditional for Slovenes. Based on that men from the occupied Slovene Styria were called up in the German army.

Any additional info on him, Klemen? His unit? According to the USHMM, there was a war correspondent named Krischanitsch, and I wonder if it's the same man.

Cheers,
Ivan
