Leutnant Ricardo Sanz Fernández

This officer was wounded three times in 1943, winning the EK1 and EK2 and the infantry assault badge. Can anyone give me any more details of his career both before and after his service in Russia? I know he was born in 1921 or 1922 and therefore it seems unlikely he saw action in the SCW, Although he may have fought against Republican guerrillas in the post-SCW period.

Best regards

He was born on 28 December 1921. He did see action in the SCW, first within a bandera of Falange and then, at the age of sixteen (after lying about his age) as "alférez provisional" in the 14th Bandera of La Legión. After the SCW he was in Spanish Morocco fighting banditry, and then served with the Batallón del Ministerio in Madrid. After his service in the Blue División he couldn't continue his career in the Spanish Army.

Many thanks. What a coincidence - my birthday is 28 December too! I assume his wounds in 1943 made him unfit for further service?

AFAIK, it was his political past (he had been involved in some Falangist "subersive" activities for the groups loyal to Hedilla) prior to going to Russia and not his wounds what prevented him from following his military career.

Once again I am in your debt Ironmachine :-) I will have to look into this further. I have ordered a book (in English) on the Division Azul to improve my knowledge. The information you have given me also indicates I have to read more about Spain's politics in the period 1939-1945.

Do you know where Fernandez was born?

Regards

Dear Keith, may I ask how come you are so curious about late Leutenant Ricardo Sanz Fernández?

Ironman, may I also ask how come you've got so much information on this person? Did Mr Ricardo Sanz have any family relations ? I hear he was the eldest son of a reknowed Falangist? I hear his younger brother was also part of the Blue Division... could you shed some light, please.

Regards.
