i'm looking to know what is the symbol on the top of his Schirmmütze ?

No symbol, IMHO, just the remaining stitching of the German Eagle who should be on this place.

Far from it. Both symbols are Croatian, not German; see https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hrvatsko_ ... stvo_(NDH)

The photo shows Džanić as a Poručnik (2nd Lieutenant) in 1942, before he joined the Partisans and the Croatian SS Division.

Not edited, only the quality of the copy is horrible. Also, there were variations of the insignia, for lower/higher officer ranks. Unfortunately, I can't find good examples (photos) of the insignia to illustrate it at the moment.
