Hello Peeter,

Thanks, this is new info for me and I guess for others as well. Because the info I wrote down was take from the
internet. So I'll change it write away.
Do you know by any chance when he was shot by the Sovjets???

Vinland, thanks for telling us about that book. But prices like that are way out of my league.
But I'll write down the name of the book, maybe someday I'll be in the position to buy it.

Greetings,
Mike

Hello Peeter,
Just wanted to write down the info you gave me on Hando Ruus and now I see that he received the DKiG on 30-12-144,
so almost three months after he had been taken prisoner by the Russians.
So did he got this medal postumously or what???

Ruus was executed circa March 1945, according to information his wife dug up after years of checking. The Germans weren't sure if he was out and out captured, or remained in Estonia as a deserter to become a partisan. But they ultimately decided his service was worthy of the DKiG, under whatever circumstances, and awarded Ruus the decoration. The story that a German aircraft flew over Estonia and dropped a container with the award onto what was believed to be a partisan stronghold is probably apocraphyl.

BTW, Mike, check out the Aberdeen Bookstore site, you can find the Estonian Freedom fighters book for far less than $94.
