I have one but I don't know how to use it. :(
Here's another possibility: please send me your e-mail address and I will send you a small program "Hjsplit" (only 174KB). It's very easy to use. With this program you can split the file into two or more pieces and then you can send it by e-mail.

My e-mail is [email protected]

Sorry to interfere with a "minor" issue  :

Was this drawing made after a photo? If yes, when was the photo taken, and in which area of the front?

The reason for which I'm asking is the Estonian NCO being armed with a Gewehr 43 semi-auto rifle, which was usually distributed to snipers and "dedicated marksmen"(holders of the Marksmanship Lanyard). Considering the scarcity of this gun - slightly over 400,000 - I'm interested in which units did use it, and in which battles.

Maybe Mait can answer your question since he posted this picture.

But here are some more scans.

On first picture from left:

About the book the picture is from:

German Army (4), 1939-1945: Eastern Front 1943-1945 (Men-At-Arms Series, 330) by Nigel Thomas

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 51-7948606

I don´t have the book yet and found the picture surfing around.

Best Regards,

Mait.

PS! Reigo, if You have more pictures of this kind, would You post them? These are my "weak spot"

Luca,

here's the song (with my clumsy translation).

"Narva" pataljon
(The "Narva" Battalion)

Kord võitles Lõuna-Venemaal,
(Once in Southern-Russia fought)
kaugel Doni steppides.
(in the far-away steppes of Don)
Vapper eesti "Narva" pataljon,
(a brave Estonian "Narva" Battalion)
laulis laulu kuradist.
(sang a song about the devil)
Meid paisati itta, kord läände,
(We were thrown to East and then again to West)
kõikjal seisime kaljudena
(we stood everywhere as rocks)
ja Neveli sood ja Tšerkassid,
(and the swamps of Nevel and Tsherkassy)
neid iial ei unusta saa.
(we can never forget them.)

:,:Rünnakrelvade terasest tules,
(In the steel-fire of assault-weapons)
kõlab leekides kuratlik naer: ha-ha-ha-ha.
(the devilish laugh sounds: ha-ha-ha-ha)
Võrsub vabadus idu, ei murra neid ridu,
(The radicle of freedom springs up, these ranks will not be broken)
sest Eesti eest andnud me kõik:,:
(because for Estonia we have given everything)

Aeg sangarid kõik unustab
(Time forgets all the valiants)
ja tandrid tasandab.
(and levels the battlefields)
Ja surnupealuu sõdureist
(And about the soldiers of death's head)
vaid tuul kord jutustab...
(only the wind will tell us...)
Teed tagasi meil ei ole,
(We don't have a road back)
ehkki häving on silmade ees.
(though ruin is in front of eyes)
Vaba Eesti eest palju ei ole,
(it is not enough for free Estonia)
kui langeb meist viimnegi mees.
(even if the last of us will fall)

:,:Rünnakrelvade terasest tules,
kõlab leekides kuratlik naer: ha-ha-ha-ha.
Võrsub vabadus idu, ei murra neid ridu,
sest Eesti eest andnud me kõik:,:

Here are some pictures about Estonian schoolboys and -girls as Luftwaffe helpers. In august 1944 conscription was declared for boys born in 1927. Alltogether about 3 000 were mobilized. About 500 of them were born in 1928-29 and were volunteers. They had the written permission of parents to join the army. Some volunteers were reportedly even 13-14 years old.

Luca,

I checked my mailbox and the song is not there. Please try again.
About the song. You heard right - it was SS-Battalion I discovered now that the words I gave you were the "modern" version of the song. I have also the very original version now, the difference is not big, but let's be pedantic :)

The words were written in the fall of 1944 in Neuhammer by Hillar Erma and Bernhard Einborn. The music was from a German military march which they liked.

Here is the original version (the source is Hillar Erma's memoirs)

Laul surnupealuu sõdurist
(The song about the soldier of death's head)

Kord võitles Lõuna-Venemaal
(Once in Southern-Russia fought)
kaugel Doni steppides
(in the far-away steppes of Don)
uljas Eesti SS-pataljon,
(a brave Estonian SS-Battalion)
lauldes laulu Kuradist.
(was singing a song about the Devil)

Kord paisati itta, kord läände,
(Once was thrown to East, then West)
kõikjal seisime kaljudena
(we stood everywhere as rocks)
ning Neveli sood ja Tšerkassõ
(and the swamps of Nevel and Tsherkassy)
meil iial ei unuda saa.
(we can never forget)

:,:Rünnak relvade terases, tules,
(Assault in the steel of arms, in the fire,
kõlab leekides Kuradi naer - hah-hah-hah!
(the Devils laugh sounds in the flames - hah-hah-hah!)
Võrsub vabadusidu,
(The radicle of freedom springs up)
ei murta neid ridu,
(these ranks will not be broken)
kes Eesti eest annavad kõik:,:
(who give everything for Estonia)

Aeg sangarid kord unustab
(Once the time forgets all the valiants)
ja tandrid tasandab
(and levels the battlefields)
ja surnupealuu sõdurist
(and about the soldier of the death's head)
vaid tuul veel jutustab.
(only the wind will still tell.)

Teed tagasi meie jaoks pole,
(There is no road back for us)
ehk küll häving on silmade ees.
(though ruin is in the front of eyes)
Vaba kodu eest palju ei oleks,
(For free home it wouldn't be much)
kui langeb meist viimnegi mees.
(even if the last of us will fall)

:,:Rünnak relvade terases, tules,
kõlab leekides Kuradi naer - hah-hah-hah!
Võrsub vabadusidu,
ei murta neid ridu,
kes Eesti eest annavad kõik:,:

Yep. Always liked the song and used to sing it with fellow university students couple of years ago during beer-drinking nights.

Mait & Tapani,

the pictures were from a Russian publication: "Vostochnye dobrovoltsõ v vermahte, politsii i SS." Moscow, 2000. The authors are S. Drobyazko and A. Karashchuk (the artist). I don't have anymore pictures about Estonians, but this book contains also color-plates about Latvians, Lithuanians, Belarussians and Ukrainians. If you are interested I can scan them. Besides I have from the same series a book about the Russian liberation Army and one about Wehrmacht infantry.

Many of the pictures from these books you can find here:

Yes, Yes, Yes...

As I said the colour pictures of uniforms are my weak spot.

Perhaps You could open up a new thread at uniforms section about that and post the pictures there?

Best Regards,

Mait.
