The Sorrow & the Pity
The Sorrow & the Pity
No doubt many of you know it, but this French film on collaboration, (by Max Ophuls) is a "must". Live interviews with politicians, former resistants, collabos, Wehrmacht, & others, including Christian de la Maziere, formerly of the French W-SS division "Charlemagne" & author of a book on his experiences as cannon fodder in the last days of the Reich.

Marcel, not Max Ophuls
The Sorrow and the Pity is a film made by Marcel, son of Max Ophuls. As the son couldn't possibly compete with the father (one of the very greatest narrative filmmakers), he didn't try, turning out a few extremely lengthy and pretentious compilation documentary films (a la Esfer Shub) instead.

Re: The Sorrow & the Pity
I've always wondered about one thing in this film: whatever become of the French naval officer who gave a filmed speech supporting the Vichy government and encouraging his countrymen to support the Nazis? Anyone know?
