Hi

the whole question about 'Ukrainian nationality' was a complete nonsense as far as the Germans were concerned. Himmler and his immediate underlings including Berger, tried (unsuccessfully) to fool everyone by saying that the only Ukrainians who could be utilised for the so called 'Galician Division' had to be 'Galicians' that is to say those who originated from the district known as 'Galicia'. Poles were prohibited from joining the unit.

That this was a nonsense is easily demonstrated. For example two brothers were born of the same Ukrainian parents in the same village in western Ukraine (ie what the Gemans called Galicia). The elder brother left home before the war and served in General Anders Polish Corps - as a Pole. The younger brother served in the Galician Division as a 'Galician' although in fact both were Ukrainians.

Next we have the nonesense of recuitment from 'Galicia'. Ukrainians from all over western Ukraine, eastern Ukraine and the other districts of the so called General Government enlisted for service. Many simply lied about their place of birth.

Lastly, Himmler's argument was that anyone who enlisted who lived in Galicia was a 'Galician' and therefor racially superior to those born outside that district. That's like me saying that Texans are not Americans but 'Texans' who are a distinct race all to themselves.

It's hard to believe that people with such a limited amount of sense could ever have been as successful as they were. Thank goodness the Brits put up a fight.

best wishes

Mike Melnyk

Scotland Yard could not find sufficient (or any) evidence to charge never mind convict these men from the Galizien Division but Stephen Ankier continues to sling mud at these with the help of the British gutter press.

Hello, I stumbled on this forum by accident. I was researching the 14th, as my Grandfather served with the 1st Galician/14th. He turned 96 yesterday. He has told me many stories about his time there, the battle of Brody, how they broke out. When they were sent to Slovenia?/Yugoslavia to fight Tito's partisans, and when he was wounded there.

I will see if I can scan some photos.
