Re: General Ganshof Vandermeersch, Belgium
Ganshof Vandermeersch was a civilian :at the mobilisation in 1939,he was appointed auditor-general to the High Military Tribunal and when the war broke out,he organized the arrestation ,followed by the deprtation to France,of thousands of suspect persons : communists,German citizens, refugees for the nazis,Flemish nationalists, etc, the great majority of them were innocent ..Several of these people were shot by the French in Abbeville ,what made Ganshof very hated in Flanders .
At the liberation,he again received his old function ,received the titular rang of general, and became responsible for the repression, which degenerated in a hunt for political opponents.
He came forward again in 1960 during the Congo question .

Re: General Ganshof Vandermeersch, Belgium
Hi Matteus
The correct spelling of his name is:
Walter Jean Oscar Louis Marie Ganshof van der Meersch.
In first instance his name was Walter Jean Oscar Louis Marie Ganshof.
It's on the 1st of april 1927, that his father received the authorisation to add the name of van der Meersch on the family name
van der meersch is the name of the spouse of Walter's father, Arthur. It's thus the family name of his mother.
Sorry for my poor english but I try do to my best.
Kindly regards from Belgium
Prosper
