Commandant, U.S. 13th Naval District

#1

Post by AJK » 26 Oct 2013, 03:22

Does anyone have information available, please, on the commandants of the 13th Naval District/Puget Sound Navy Yard during the following periods:

13 Feb 1914 - 20 Jul 1915: Rear Admiral Vincendon L. Cottman retired from that command on 13 Feb 1914, and Captain Robert E. Coontz (later Admiral) was appointed to that command on 20 Jul 1915.

11 Dec 1934 - 1 Jul 1935: Rear Admiral John Halligan died on 11 Dec 1934 while commanding the Naval District/Navy Yard, and Rear Admiral Thomas T. Craven took up command on 1 Jul 1935.

Normally, the Chief of Staff of the Naval District/Navy Yard would fill in as acting commander, but I cannot find any information as to who held that position during the periods in question.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The acting commandant in 1935 was Captain Henry G. S. Wallace. Looks like he served in that position briefly April 1 - July 13.

Thank you, Takao, for this information. Wallace was Captain of the Puget Sound Navy Yard since 7 June 1932, so it makes sense that he would be available to take acting command of the Navy Yard and Naval District when so required. I wonder about the accuracy of the 1 April 1935 starting date for Wallace... Perhaps he was given his acting command earlier?

Perhaps this is just when it became "official", but without any supporting documentation, this is just a guess. Regretfully, that is hard to come by.

You can download many of the "Registers of the Commissioned Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps" in .pdf format here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AMH/USN ... Registers/
Google Books also has several years to look at.

They are large files(the 1935 one is 85.5 meg), so it is better to download than open with.

Thanks for the information. I am aware of these registers, which I have been using extensively in my research. Their weakness is that they do not cover changes that occurred between publications, but they are nevertheless a goldmine of information.
