Possibly after service in the ranks this officer was commissioned into the Buffs regiment in June 1940. He then transferred to 44 Recce Regiment. I believe that this unit was created from the anti-tank company of the Buffs and that subalterns were assigned to A Squadron. Barton went on to win the MC with the regiment in Tunisia before trasferring to the commandos in December 1943 or January 1944. His later exploits with 2 Commando and SOE are the stuff of legend.

Finally I get to my questions!

Did Barton serve in the Grenadier Guards from 1938?

Which OCTU was he with in 1939-1940?

When did he join 2 Commando (I think he led a sub-section of 5 Troop from February/March 1944 until removed in July 1944).

regards

I think he may have been recruited to 2 Commando because of their heavy casualties at Salerno in September 1943.
