Foreign Heroes of the Soviet Union

Postby JohnW on 25 May 2002 14:49

All,

I was wondering if anyone had the names of any foreigners who received the title "Hero of the Soviet Union"? I have the names of the four French fighter pilots but that's all. All help appreciated.

Foreign heroes of SU

Hello:

Nasser, President of Egypt was given that "honnor" in the mid 60s. If I'm not mistaken, his Army chief of Staff was also given this title, though his name escapes me at this moment.

Andy,

You are correct, many Allied commanders received Soviet orders and decorations during and shortly after WWII. The most notable being General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower and Field Marshal Bernard law Montgomery both of whom received the Soviet Order of Victory by decree of 5 June 1945. Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgi K. Zhukov awarded the order to Eisenhower and Montgomery in Berlin on that date. This stunning order was made of platinum inset with rubies and 16 carat diamonds (see image).

Of interest, General George S. Patton, Jr. was awarded the Soviet Order of Kutuzov, 1st Class (No. 58, awarded 14 May 1945 by Marshal Tolbukhim by decree of 30 November 1943). This decree also awarded Patton the Soviet Guards Badge.

Other notable U.S. generals who received Soviet orders and decorations:

General of the Army George C. Marshall - Soviet Order of Suvorov
Brig Gen Frederick W. Castle - Two awards of the Soviet Order of Kutuzov (class ?)
General Ira C. Eaker - Soviet Order of Kutuzov (class ?)
General Matthew B. Ridgway - Soviet Order of the Red Banner

Regards,
Shawn

The Soviet Union was also allied in the coalition against the national socialist Germany and thus Soviet fighters should also be considered Allied fighters.

The list is based on: "Geroi Sovetskogo Sojuza." 2nd Band, p. 846.
Unfortunately the list is in Cyrillic. I managed to check most of the names, but you see ? after these, which I didn't find. Some comments are also added. The date inicates, when the order was published to award them.

The country you refer to as "Bolgaria" is actually called "Bulgaria"

Starinov, your info is wrong.

Here is the story:
On May 6, 1960, Mercader was released from Lecumberri prison and flown immediately to Havana. After some time he arrived in Moscow via Prague, decorated as a Hero of the Soviet Union, under the name of Ramon Lopez. In the mid ‘70’s Mercader returned to Cuba where he died in 1978. His widow, a mexican woman he married while in prison, took his remains back to Moscow where they lie in Kuntsevo Cemetery.

My memory is quite good :P

See for details:

Hero of the Soviet Union in Paris has(had) restaurant

Postby Lars Gyllenhaal on 03 Sep 2002 21:56

While in Paris in the mid-80`s I read a review about a restaurant in the city that was run by a Frenchman (or was it a Spaniard) who was a Hero of the SU. I seem to remember that the review also stated that his restaurant was full of wartime memorabilia, but I may be fantasizing on that point. Anyone know of this restaurant and/or its owner? Is it still around? I am sorry I never got around to visiting back then...

Cheers,

Buenas tardes!
A mistake:
Angela Chcivon
not Angela but ANIELA and not Chcivon, but KRZYWOÑ. (Does everybody see the last letter? If not please to install Polish fonts): Only the date is OK): Don't worry. I know Polish is very difficult for foreigners........):

Aniela Krzywoñ was a soldier of Independent Female Batallion (a part
of Polish 1st Infantry Division fighting with the Soviets). Therefore
she was the best shooter (using PPSh) she got the order (with 3 other female
fussiliers) to guard a truck ("Studebacker") loaded by very important maps and documents. Close to front the truck has been attacked by a German aircraft and started to burn. A few soldiers in the truck has been killed and wounded. Realized of the order A. Krzywoñ jumped into the truck and threw out the ducuments. Unfortunately she burnt in the truck. She was the lowest ranked soldier (private) awarded by Soviet "Hero of the Soviet Union" and Polish "Virtuti Militari" of V class during battle of Lenino.
