Tuco wrote: BTW - Any photos you might have of Estonians or soldiers from Latvia armed with the Mosin Nagant, I would be very interested in seeing.
Eeh, you think it's so easy

I am not so familiar with Mossin Nagant as you are. On most of the pictures there is visible only part of the gun.

But OK, here are two pictures of Estonian platoons with rifles what i presume that those are Mossins. And one Latvian soldier with some rifle. Not sure which model, but as he also have such nice helmet and sabre - i thought the picture is worth of posting

Thanks again. I added some of these to the photo section of Estonian Arms Dot Com, if that is ok with you. If not I will take them down. I would like to talk with you about an AF artilce for the site so I will send you a note on this.

You are welcome!

I read the first your post and still remember for what you asked those pictures

Maybe only bit more info with photos? About Gourdou Lesseure fighters i like wrote smthng. This photo of Estonian BE-2 what now have only signature "1920s" - it was one of the few Estonian planes what participated in our Independence war. This picture has been taken probably bit later, somewhere near Tallinn. Must check a bit maps from those days but even now i have some ideas where this picture has been taken.

And 2 more photos for you.

First - Estonian planes on exhibition in Riga on the spring of 1939. Those are not only Estonian planes, but also Estonian constructed and built planes. On the front is PTO-4. Quite succesful advanced trainer what was compared in tests with Miles Magister by Estonian AF. And found as better. And was ordered as advanced trainer for Estonian AF.

On second photo there are proud of Latvian Navy - their submarines Ronis and Spidola. Estonians were bit jellows on Latvians when they bought those submarines. There was a joke going aroung - how to sink Latvian submarine? You have to swim close and knock on the door. They will open...

I hope that didn't insult our Latvian friends

8O The bicycles look brand new civilian ones to me (too much chrome and too weak construction) and are probably for the parade only?

Some more pic's

First - one armored train wagon about what i even don't know in which train it was - so, possibly quite rare 8)

And then some "youngsters" who were leaders of Estonian Army during Independence war. - Laidoner and Larka. Also quite rare pics. Look the uniform on Larka personal photo...

Nublu, excellent photos. But can you tell something about these gentlemen in photos? All of us are not very well aware of the Estonian officers and Generals...

Johan Laidoner was highest commander of Estonian Armed Forces during our War of Independence. And got the same place back for small period after communist putch attempt on 1924. And then again after Päts took power on 1934. And was on the same post until 1940. Was arrested by communists, and died in Russia in captivity 1954.

Andres Larka was chief of staff of Estonian Armed Forces during our War of Independence. He retired from army somewhere 20ies (sry, don't remember exact dates, and now bit busy and can't check the sources), and in 30ies he was in oppositional (and sometimes described as fascist) movement called Vabadussõdalased, or vapsid...

Those pictures are from Independence War period. When both were still young  This portrait of Larka is even from earlier time as he is still wearing Russian Army uniform. And btw, In Russian army was also started to organise Estonian Division on 1917. And Larka was in beginning commander of this Division, and later chief of staff. When Laidoner arrived and took over the position of commander. And situation was same again in late 1918. When after German capitulation on western front Estonians started to organise their army again. Larka was in Estonia and took the position of highest commander again, until Laidoner returned from Russia, where he went to hide from Germans...
