Monthly German ground troop strength on the Western Front

Postby CJK1990 on 07 Jun 2012 03:38

Anybody have any documentation on exactly how many ground troops the Germans had in the West from October 1944 to March 1945?

I guess I'm a little disappointed nobody has responded. I saw a source that claimed there were about 700,000 in September 1944, but that was it.

This might give you an idea of the complexity.

The problem is that there are various counting methods.
Do you mean Army Troops.
Are SS included?
What about Luftwaffe/Navy?
The area is a minefield.

There are a number of threads here on the subject.

I am already well aware of the complexity. I know that Germans gave the strength of Heer, SS, and Luftwaffe ground troops on various dates for the Eastern front (for example 2.2 million on 1 January 1945, according to a book I read) and am wondering what the correspending figures for the Western front are.

It fluctuated, but by the same measure as the one you refer for the East, we are generally in the territory of 6-700,000, if I remember correctly. That is, in (non-mediterranean) France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
