Casualties in St. Lo

Postby Imad on 21 Dec 2010 04:08

Hello

I need a breakdown on casualties, both American and German for the battle of St. Lo during Overlord in 1944. Thanks in advance.

That's going to be almost impossible to do except as a gross estimate. For one thing, what do you include as the "battle of St. Lo"? Is that just the 29th Division push on the city itself? Or does it include the 35th Division supporting attacks to the west? Or the 2nd Division attack to secure Hill 122? Even the records are hard to follow; the 29th Division ELRs exceed the reported casualties for the period 10-18 July by about 20%.

However, best guess would be about 2,320 casualties for the 29th Division; c. 305 KIA/DOW, 1,877 WIA, and 138 MIA/CAP. For the Germans it's even less clear; perhaps 281 KIA, 843 WIA, and 199 CAP is probably the absolute minimum for the units of 3. FJD, 352. ID, and 2. SS Pz-D engaged.

Cheers!
