The soldier shown may also have the seperate "hood" that was issued with the tankers' uniform. "Helmet, Winter, Combat" was an insulated head cover that looks at first glance like an AAF flight helmet of the era but it was made from cotton cloth versus leather. These hoods were stand alone items (i.e. not attached to the jackets) and some troops probably got ahold of any warm head covers they could find. Usually these were worn under the helmets (or under tankers' helmets for vehicluar crews). The one in the photo stands out by being worn alone. Due to the shortage of cold weather clothing in the front lines in 1944-45 about anything was grabbed and used for winter warmth.
