Dutch Division commanders 1940

#1

Post by Kelvin » 15 Aug 2016, 09:02

Hi, I see some sources that German released most of Dutch solders and commanders after victory in France. They only held Dutch commander in chief and some corps commanders. And all Division commanders and junior leaders were released. Did they all released or some after release, joined German Waffen SS or other units ? Thank

Hi, Bramvans, Dutch had nine division commanders, are they all released then some joined SS voluntarily or they were released on condition that they helped German , joined SS or something like security or managment ?

There is no Dutch Division commander that joined the W-SS. Only officers from the lower ranks voluntarily joined the W-SS (or the Freiwilligen Legion Niederlande, later transformed to an SS-unit).

And there is of course the retired general and Chief of Staff Hendrik Seyffardt that became the commander (only on paper) of the Freiwilligen Legion Niederlande.

Best wishes Bram

Dutch POW were released after the 15 May 1940 capitulation of the Netherlands. They and all military men were sent home upon giving their pledge not to take up arms again against the Germans. Then in 1943, all were required to report to the German authorities to register. Many were then sent to POW camps in Germany and places east, remaining there until released by advancing Allied troops.
Information not passed on is lost.
