Long-Range Bombing on Yaroslavl', Gorkyi and Saratov in 1943
Long-Range Bombing on Yaroslavl', Gorkyi and Saratov in 1943
Hi, I'm looking for detailed info on German long-range bombings on Yaroslavl', Gorkyi and Saratov on June 1943 which got just limited success.
My questions are as follows:
1. Who mastermined these air raids?
2. How many aircrafts did the Germans lose in these air raids?
3. How many losses did the Soviets suffer?
4. If the Germans had had full success in this air operation, what effects would it have had on future operations in that year?
Does anybody know any websites dealing with these bombings? Russian or German websites would be OK.

Thanks, Kim, for your question.

Richard Muller's The German Air Force in Russia has the most complete description I have found. ISBN 1-877853-13-5
Korten was behind it, but it was a typical effort --- too little and too late.

Scott Fraser

Re: Long-Range Bombing on Yaroslavl', Gorkyi and Saratov in
The idea was to hit the electrical plants that supplied industries. I don't know if there was much if any damage. The two main issues were a lack of pilots and suitable bombers. Germany was suffering a severe lack of bomber pilots and the intended bomber the HE 177 was having too many problems to work properly. The airfields that the Germans used were overrun and the cities were out of range

Ploecher "german airforce vs russia 1942 " p 114 and next few pages mentions attacks on gorki and yaroslawl in 1942 with few planes

Also pp75-85 of Ploecher GAF vs Russia 1943 describes the campaign. Doesn't mention attack on saratov though.
Also, for eg, history of kg4 and othe kg's in german.

German Air intel had identified aviation fuel production as a potential weakness on the soviet side - hence saratov refinery. But having googled "bombing saratov 1943" i find conflicting references - one says that "saratov tractor plant produced and repaired t34s and was completely destroyed after constant bombing in october 1942"
Another search result says that the germans bombed the yak aircraft factory at saratow
1000 sorties were flown against the tank factories at gorki, 6 planes lost. Damage was heavy according to hoeffding, to a plant producing light tanks. Another plant producing 1500 t34s pa was not identified or hit.
These raids were part of a larger campaign in the mud season which Ploecher describes well - a soviet build up was identified and the seasonally rail traffic (increased because of the impassibility of roads.) was attacked .

No T-34s or other tanks were produced in Saratov. Saratov combine harvester factory was reoriented toward producing Yak type fighter airplanes before the war start.lufty1 wrote:German Air intel had identified aviation fuel production as a potential weakness on the soviet side - hence saratov refinery.
