According to the book "With our backs to Berlin", the commander of the the defence of the Reichtag was SS-Lieutenant Babick of the 2nd Regiment of the SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. With him was the "Potential leaders company" of Spreehagen, about 100 man strong. Also, about 250 sailors sent to Berlin by Dönitz to protect the fuhrer ended up defending the Reichtag, being called "The Dönitz contribution". Further, a company of paratroopers from the 9th Parachute Divison, plus appox 100 Volkssturm and stragglers defended the Reichstag. In all, no more than 550 combatants as opposed to the 5000 Russians attacking.
