Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

19 ID - Parzimiechy/. Działoszyn

The 19 ID crossed the border State with Poland at 04:45 hours by Julianpol heading towards Dzialoszyn with two regiments in forward edge, the IR 73 to the right and the IR 59 to the left. The fact was reported by a Cyclist Platoon to under ppor (2º Lieutenant) Molteni. At 06:15 hours the Germans crossed the road Czestochowa - Wielun. Ahead were waiting the Polish troops of the III. /83 pp (Mjr Mieczyslaw Olęderczyk) with the following deployment:

Its 9. Company plus a machine gun Platoon in the village of Parzymiechy; its 7. Company plus a machine gun Platoon in the heights due northwest of the town and its 8. Company with an antitank Platoon and mortars within the forest located 1 kilometer due east of the town.

The first contact took place around 08:30 hours between the I./IR 73 under Oberstleutnant Hoehne and the 9. /83 pp under por. (lieutenant) R. Gordon. Later were engaged by the polish side, the 7. Company and the 2. /30 pal unleashing its fire on the German troops which underwent several losses, a direct hit burst in the CP of the German battalion and its Commander received serious wounds (Oberstleutnant Hoehne died during the evacuation and was replaced by Hauptmann Wolf).

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

19 ID - Parzimiechy/. Działoszyn.

At 10:00 hours the 19 ID reassumed the attack with strong artillery support. The III. /83 pp received the order of the Commander of the 83 pp (plk Nadachowski) to maintain the position until dusk and then to fall back towards the Warta. At the same time he ordered to the II. /83 pp to mount an attack on Parzymiechy along the forest road to alleviate the situation in the town; nevertheless this attack was stopped and in the fight that ensued were killed in action the Chief of the 5. /83 pp (ppor. Stanislaw Wojcik) and a dozen of polish soldiers.

Meanwhile the I./IR 73 with the support of the III. /AR 19 had conquered Napoleon (between Parzymiechy and Lipie) and by 16:00 hours the situation of the polish defenders was already desperate. Around 20:00 hours and according to an order of General Cehak (Commander of the 30 DP) the Polish battalion withdrew after it underwent serious losses (the Chief of the 7. /83 pp ppor. Victor Biełowicz and near 30 soldiers of this subunit; the Chief of the 9. /83 pp R. Gordon was seriously wounded also).

The IR 74 (Oberst Schmidt) within the framework of the 19 ID advanced as reserve from Rosenberg (west of Brieg) in northeast direction.

The 19 ID did not cary out the pursuit and instead occupied defensive positions in the places it had reached during the night.

Uffz. Hans Meiners fell the on September 01 of 1939 when crossing the border with Poland while he served with the advanced fractions; elsewhere its unit clarified that: he fell in action while advancing one of the first of his regiment and inadvertently entering into a Polish minefield around 07:30 hours (the first contact was at 08:30 but Polish hour, it could be at the same time if the Germans had one hour less). The III. /IR 59, to which belonged the 10. Company of the Oberleutnant Lieff (and Meiners was with that Company too) was instructed to collaborate with the IR 73 in the reduction of the Polish resistance.

Hi Tigre!

Hope You will welcome a little input

It is about Uffz. Hans Meiners.

There is written in obituary You attached that he was from Inf.Reg.82.
It is strange, but at VB they have written his nachname as Meinders, but it could be mistake.
At VB they have also written his Todesort as Przystajn.

I have also information that on 01.09.39. I.R.82 supported action of 1.Pz.Div. and one soldier fell during that action.

It all fit together. Przystajń is a village on the way from Grunsruh to Panki. And it was 1.Pz.Div. way - quite far from Parzymiechy - Napoleon area. So the question is: what source says that Uffz. Hans Meiners was from 10./I.R.59 ?

Hello nimbuss, your little input is welcome :D; I've checked my files again and it was mentioned Prytain as the last resting place of Hans Meiner (see below); that matches with the road of the IR 82. Nevertheless, in the picture of the grave (I do not know he was the same guy) it could be seen that Uffz Meiners was part of the 10 JR 59 (unless my sight was poor).

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

02 September of 1939.

The three infantry divisions of the Lodz Army (10 DP, 28 DP and 30 DP) took contact with the German forces in front of the defensive position. Violent combats ensued all day long with support of artillery, aviation and tanks. Initially the positions were held by the Polish forces but soon the 10 DP was rejected with heavy losses on Sieradz.

In the area of Działoszyn, the combats concentrated in the South sector of the defense and the 30 DP was put under artillery fire of the 18 ID and the 19 ID. At 09:00 hours a ferocious combat took place in Raciszyn between the II./ 84 pp and troops of 19 ID as a result of it the Poles withdrew towards Działoszyn. The artillery of the 30 DP supported the withdrawal opened fire on a German battalion in Raciszyn. The artillery of the XI AK massed its fires on the defensive positions of the 82 pp and the 84 pp whereas an enemy infantry regiment approached up to the positions of the III. / 84 pp in Działoszyn.

On the defensive sector of the 82 pp the enemy was prepared to attack against Załęcze Wlk. - Troniny. At 12:30 hours the Warta River was crossed with heavy fights in Sensow and Działoszyn, collapsing the defense of the 4. and 5. Companies; in Bobrowniki a strongpoint in the sector of the 2. Company of 82 I./pp was conquered. During the counterattacks carried out by the Polish troops fell in action the Commander of I./ 82 pp, Mjr. Zygmunt Rosiński and the Chief of the 8. Company, por. Żaczek.

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

02 September of 1939.

Meanwhile proceeded the German advance on Radomsk and the locality was directly threatened.

On September 02 of 1939, the SR 1 received the order to occupy Radomsko which did before 08:00 hours. In afternoon, the regiment approached up to the heights due north of the burning Kamiensk, since the PR 1 found hard resistance there. In the Early hours on September 02 of 1939, the PR 2 continued towards Jala, where the regiment fell under artillery fire and suffered several losses. The PR 2 crossed the Warta River by Gidle and Plavno, later the regiment was directed to Radomsko.

The 4 Pz’s order for this day stated: the division has the task of conquering the crossing points in Ostrowy (Oksa), Kocin (Kozinka) and Szczepocice (Warta). The attack should be carried out to the right by IR 12 (less its III. Battalion) and to the left SR 12 (reinforced with 1 company of PR 36); boundary between both units South Miedzno - South Ostrowy - North Kocin.

At 09:00 hours jumped off the I./SR 12 and conquered Ostrowy after overcoming weak resistance. The II. /SR 12 followed in a motorized march from Miedzno to Ostrowy South. The heights located due northeast of the forest located to the east of Ostrowy were defended by the Cavalry Brigade Wolhynia, reinforced by an infantry battalion.

The I./SR 12 launched its charge through the coverless ground counting on with a double support; on one hand the fire of the AR 103 and on the other hand the 6. /SR 12 (reserve of the regiment) reinforced by light armored vehicles (panzerspähwagen) 8x8 of AA 7. The assigned objective was taken by 18:00 hours. The 6. Company, which had reached its objective advancing through the forest, had suffered heavy losses (10 KIA and 20 WIA).

The II. /SR 12 (except its 6. Company) raked the wooded land due south-east of Ostrowy and assaulted Kocin where it connected with the neighbor to the right, IR 12. The SR 12 covered the advance of the 4 Pz to the northeast of Ostrowy (I. Battalion) and the wooded land north of Kocin (II. Battalion); Ostrowy was the crossing point between the 4 Pz marching the east and the 31 ID marching to the north. The night passed in calm.

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

02 September of 1939.

To the west of Czestochowa, the rest of the 7 DP was vigorously attacked by German fast elements and the line Klobuck - Woznicki was lost. During the night from 02 till 03 of September of 1939, the last fractions were rejected towards Janow.

On September 02 of 1939 IR 11 continued with the previous disposition. In the high ground due south-east of Klepaczka were reached the fortified positions against which it was fought yesterday. After crossing the railroad line Biezen-Klobutzko it went to the offensive against Wreczyka-Wielka. Without contact with the enemy, the objective was obtained. The advance of the I. Btl. it was seen very affected in its march capacity. In addition to this regiment (IR 11) the roads assigned to it were exceptionally in bad conditions. Around noon from the edge of the the forest due west of Kalej, the III.Btl was attacked suddenly and unexpectedly with machine guns and bombs by 9 Polish airplanes flying at low height from the direction of Czestochowa.

The companies took cover in the ditches to the sides of the route. Seemingly by the low height, the dropped bombs did not explode. Thus, for example, a bomb fell no more than two steps of Hauptmann Rümenapp. Oberleutnant Emmerich received the order of Oberst Haase to continue the march in loosing formation. The regiment had lost only a dead, a bomb fell on its back. At 17:00 hours, the AR 14 opened fire against a line of fortifications in Grabovka it was had the suspicion that they were already occupied. Towards the night it was reached the assigned objective, Kalej, which already was occupied by the 2. /AA 14; the 2. /AR14 maintained its fire against positions in the neighborhood of Tschenstochau.

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

02 September of 1939.

On September 02 of 1939 and after one short artillery preparation, the IR 101, took the edges of the wooded zone in Golce. Soon the regiment reached the objective assigned for that day, the hills near Wreczyca-Wielka, due northwest of Czestochowa.

On September 02 of 1939 the I. /AR 14 supported the IR 11 and the III. /AR 14 was in support of the IR 101; the II. /AR 14 entered in fire position due west of Wreczyca Wielka. The I./AR 50 was emplaced to the east of Klepaczka. The I.Group lost three horses due to an aerial attack. The Groups I. and III shot 250 projectiles against field positions due northwest of Czestochowa (Tschenstochau) and towards Grabovka

Since the morning, the main defensive position of the 7 DP, on the west side of Czestochowa was bombed by the Luftwaffe and the German heavy artillery. The main units of the 1 Pz pressed forwards in the direction of Kamyk and Radostków and, next, in Mykanów.

During the day the IV Bombing Group carried out an incursion on the German armor columns losing almost a 50% of its planes.

Hello to all :D; a little more about it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

03 September of 1939.

In the morning of 03 of September of 1939, the Lodz Army settles in its defensive positions on the line Warta - Widawka; from south to north were deployed the Cavalry Brigade “Volhynia”, the 30 DP, the 28 DP and the 10 DP.

The Germans resumed their ground and aerial attacks inflicting strong casualties in Sieradz. Meanwhile in the south the annihilation of the 7 DP in Janow is completed and General Gosiorowski was taken prisoner with all his General Staff.

On September 03 of 1939, the IR 11 received the task of conquering the Polish resistence line due west of Grabowka. The Regiment advanced in the middle of a dense fog, with two battalions in forward edge (II. and III.) and the I. Battalion in reserve. The III. Battalion had detached a patrol in charge of an officer (the Chief of the 10. Company) which detected that the fortifications had been left by the adversary. Except the disadvantages caused by the blast of a bridge in the Tschenstochau - Klobuzko route and a marshy sector of a stream due south-east of Szarlejka, the IR 11 did not find other difficulties.

During this day the 14. /IR 11 had received the order to execute a vigorous reconnaissance on the northeast sector of Tschenstochau/Czestochowa. The reconnaissance detachment (integrated by 4 MG-PKW, motorcycles and an anti-tank gun) entered in the city without finding resistence. Part of the regiment (III. Battalion) continued the march towards Gorne-Dolna and the I. Battalion marched to the city where it was received with flowers by the population of Germanic ethnic group. The ground which surrounded the urban area had been mined and a mobile field kitchen of the II. Battalion was destroyed.

Hello to all :D; the last part of it..........

The Battle by the High Warthe River.

03 September of 1939.

The night from the 02 till 03 of September of 1939 passed in calm. Around mid-morning on September 03 of 1939 an advanced detachment marched towards Radomsko. The SR 12 rested and for the first time the listened the “Polenlied” by the radio. At 16:00 hours the SR 12 marched to its next objective (Rgt.Staff, II. Btl, light Column of infantry, I. Btl) behind the NA 79. The objective of the march of 20 kilometers (due west of Kruszyna) was reached to midnight travelling by sandy and marshy tracks. After a short rest the march continued towards the south of Szczepocice.

In spite of an aerial raid carried out by the II. Bombing Group on German armored elements in the region of Radomsk - Kamiensk, losing 6 airplanes, the 4 Pz seized both localities before mentioned and threatened Piotrkow. Radomsk was occupied around 07:45 hours; at 09:00 hours air strike and at 11:00 hours conquest of Kamiensk.

The contact between the Armies Lodz and Krakow was broken and the cavalry brigade fell back on Kaliska. General Rommel (Commander of the Lodz Army) was forced to improvise a weak cork between Kamiensk and Piotrkow with the 2 pp reinforced with the Machine-gun battalion 7.

In order to avoid the encirclement of Lodz by the south and to assure the contact with the right wing of the Prusia Army (in the region of Tomaszow-Maz.) General Rommel decided to break away completely the contact with the Krakow Army and deployed his army on the Warta and the Widawka facing to the southwest and between the Widawka and the Pilica with its front of the south. After the first three days of battle, the Germans had secured their objectives and they were prepared to fight the breakthrough battle.

Hello to all :D; the history follows towards Piotrkow......................

The fighting by Piotrkow - September 1939.

On September 04 of 1939, in the morning, the Army Corps of General Kruszewski (North group of the Army “Prussia”) tried to move from Tomaszow-Maz. towards Piotrkow/Petrikau under protection of a weak cork organized the previous day on the line Belchatow - Rosprza. General Dab-Biernacki (Commander of the Army “Prussia”) prescinded of General Kruszewski and actually he personally commanded the troops

The German attack was launched by two armored divisions (the 1 Pz and the 4 Pz) within the framework of the XVI AK (Mot) under Command of General Hoeppner. Coming from Kamiensk, the 4 Pz, managed to conquer two bridgeheads in the Polish defensive position, in Lask and Rosprza. In spite of the threat that means the Cavalry Brigade “Wilno” deployed in the forests of Lubien on its right flank, the German Commander, decided to penetrate towards Piotrkow; nevertheless, the advance was delayed by a Polish bombing.

On the other hand the 1 Pz, which had reached to the left the same height that its neighbor (the 4 Pz) forced the crossing of the Widawka advancing towards the northeast in a diverging axis and broke its contact with the other Pz Division. The Polish troops already weakened, tired by the constant fights and badly led only offered a slight resistance. It is precise to comment that General Dab-Biernacki had a little professional knowledge and had not made any War School, hence his designation to Command the Army Prussia had been due to friendship; from the beginning of his career he had been within the circle of the great Marshal Pilsudski.

Hello to all :D; the history follows......................

The fighting by Piotrkow - September 1939.

On September 04 of 1939 the SR 1 continued the advance towards the east and around 14:00 hours it had found resistance in Laski. During the building of a makeshift bridge there, the 2. /SR 1 underwent serious losses. The enemy still occupied the forest of Wygoda and had to be reduced. When the night fell, the Regiment broke away from the enemy and established a bridgehead in Jezow.

The recce troop Leutnant Metzger was conducting reconnaissance in the woods of Lubien. In early morning he attacked from south and southwest many times and found the woods was occupied by strong enemy force. Then all of a sudden on the southern edge he received strong enemy fire. The 8-wheeled armored car was hit, and Panzerschütze Beyer and Saynisch was killed. It was impossible to move using backward steering because Saynisch layed there. Still the heavily wounded troop leader and Panzerschütze Völker was able to bail out. The third light armored car recovered the troop leader in spite of heavy infantry fire, but Panzerschütze Völker died in the process. The second light armored car, only 100m away during the recovery attempt, drove back but the chassis fell into swampy field. But the crew Gefreiter Schmidt, Panzerschütze Bruner, Funker Süß did not give up, and with the help of some Volksdeutschen civilian, the vehicle was again able to move. They returned to the Abteilung. Recce troop Wachtmeister Dölling came back with heavily exhausted Leutnant Metzger. Three killed comrades and a heavily wounded officer will remain in the history of the Aufklärungsabteilung.

On September 04 of 1939, the 14 ID which previously had been subordinate to a motorised Army Corps returned to its old IV A.K., under Command of General d Infanterie v. Schwedler. The march of the division continued in the following order: The I.R. 101 in the lead, the I.R. 11 in the second line and behind followed the IR. 53. At 08:00 hours, the IR 11 had left its bivouac and then marched towards PACIERZOW with his I. Battalion., then the III. Battalion and finally the II. Battalion. The regiment encamped along the PACIERZOW-Piaski highway. Attacks to the bivouac were registered for the first time during the night on the part of civilians reason why it was ordered to the troops to be ready to march, with the vehicles on the way and with the horses saddled.

Your threads are always intersting. Usually you're using divisional history books that you translate from german to english?
