68. Inf.Div. July 1944 Lemberg
Hello,
Does someone have Information about actions of 68. Inf.Div. at Lemberg around 27th of July 1944. Especially G.R.169.. Everything would be usefull.. Overall Situation of the Army (1. Pz.Armee I think), XXIV.A.K., 68. I.D., Gren.Rgt.169... maps, diaries etc.. I ask this because I would need some Information soon and the sources I have available at the Moment do not cover this area, units.. So every link, Information etc.. is welcomed.
thanks in advance,
Christoph

Have you looked at the Soviet General Staff study published by Glantz? Maybe there's something in there.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

The only description of the battle I could think of is in Rolf Hinze "With the Courage of Desperation" chapters 4 and 5. There is no mention of the 68th division but the text indicates it wasn't part of the XXIV. PzK, more likely the III. PzK or XXXXVI. PzK. There is suppose to exist a history of the 68.Inf.Div. but only in manuscript form.
There are no records at NARA from that time period for 1. Pz.AOK, III. PzK, XXXXVI. PzK or 68. Inf.Div. but there are some for XXIV. PzK (T314 R733 and R734)
Here are the maps in the Glantz (the text states the 68. Inf.Div. had been recently from the Kolomyia area but that is all) the original are of poor quality. The 68. Inf.Div. is near L'vov on all three maps.
