looking for broadcasts from Eastern Europe

#1

Post by harry6116 » 13 Apr 2014, 02:24

hey all,
this is a hard one but here goes.
i'm on the lookout for radio programs from eastern European countries from 1939 to 1945.
broadcasts from poland would be some of the most interesting also soviet broadcasts.
I have not been able to ascertain whether there're any broadcasts available from Finland and other such countries.
i can not find an online place where i can listen to this kind of thing.
I have Japanese and German broadcast as well as plenty of broadcasts from the Allies. Today I got to thinking about those countries like Lithuania, Poland and others. i'm looking for news, speeches and anything else of value from the war period. I do have the June 22 announcement of the invasion of the soviet union by Molotov and one or two speeches by Stalin but that about does it for the eastern European campaign in terms of audio.
thanks for any help on this.

Michael

Hi Michael, This link has a number of broadcasts to the Czech people from Radio Praha during the May 1945 Prague uprising (in Czech of course). http://www.radio.cz/en/static/world-war-ii-65-years-on/
As a licensed amateur radio operator I find this topic interesting and will try to ferret out some more.
Cheers,
Max

I would say post in "Life in the Third Reich and Weimar Republic". That also deals with the occupied territories. Or you can ask the moderators in "Guidelines and Instructions".

It was illegal to own a radio receiver in most Eastern European countries during the WWII. In major cities the loudspeakers were installed in main streets. Only broadcast those people had were OKW communiques in local language and march music.
In cinemas DDW in local language before movie.
So is this something you are after? Or you are more interested in German radio broadcast to German population on occupied territories?

Greg,
You make a very good point. In Germany at least listening on other than the Volksempfänger with it's reduced sensitivity and lack of shortwave bands which limited its reception was illegal, but some people did have SW radios which they listened to clandestinely to allied broadcasts. As to the occupied territories, of course all the broadcasts were government controlled such as Radio-Paris which broadcast music and propaganda regularly, and as the end drew near and and more nations were liberated there were some broadcasts such as the one I previously posted during the Prague uprising at the very end of the war. Whether anyone had the equipment to listen to them is another matter but it shouldn't have been a problem to broadcast locally as long as the existing transmitters were left intact.

hey,
is there any stuff i can listen to online?
I believe the major archives around the world have a responsibility to digitise the collections that they have. some are better than others at this. I won't even talk about the Australian archives.

hey,
thanks for the links.
I had two English service broadcast announcements, have always wondered if there are anymore of them?
The speech from Finland is also extremely helpful thanks for that.
