Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
Hello to all ; anyone has more details about this?...................
Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
While the Russians are able to cross a river with makeshift means; for example in 1941 a cavalry corps cross the Dnieper at night in that way with thousands of horses swimming around; the surprise was complete for the Germans. To keep the element of surprise, the Soviets will not hesitate to attempt the crossing where the banks are the highest, steepest, where the lack of ground covered for the approach, where the water is the largest. The best example is provided at Gubinsky (sketch below).

Re: Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
Raúl,
I heard about crossing on 26-28 of September 1943, not in 1941.
Village was known as Губенскoе back then. Today it's called Губенське (Hubens'ke).
It's halfway between Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporizhia.
The other village was called Петрово-Свистуново (Petrowo-Swistunowo) on German map from 1942.
Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg ; could be, maybe the example was wrongly labelled and the town mispelled, thanks anyway . Cheers. Raúl M .
Re: Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
Nothing but a limited foray with recon/diversionary mission. Soviet recon groups (80 and 40 men) crossed the Dnieper in this area (Voiskovoye and Fedorovka) in the night 3/4 September meeting no resistance initially. They were additionally reinforced but after certain combat with Hungarian troops retreated to the eastern bank of the Dnieper by 7 September. Soviet units in the area belonged to the 270 Rifle Division and attached kombrig Gudkov's regiment (some ad-hoc detachment apparently), by all probability they had no more than several hundred men west of the Dnieper. Their adversaries were said to be Hungarian troops.
No idea what they mean by cavalry corps crossing the Dnieper swimming and if that relates to the episode described above at all.

Re: Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
My bad, I forgot to mention. It was September 1941.
Re: Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
Thanks Art, I'll take a look around that date. Cheers. Raúl M .
Re: Dniepr crossing at Gubinsky 1941.
It's unlikely there was any Soviet cavalry corps in the area in September 1941. 12 Army was weak, with 2-3 infantry divisions.
And yes, Hungarian Rapid Corps was on the other side of the river.
Perhaps earlier in August, when German 25.ID(mot) was there?
Crossing in 1943 was a large one, but only by infantry on boats, not cavalry, so the whole story is a bit of mistery.
