Soviet winter counteroffensive, 1941-1942

Post by CNE503 » 05 Nov 2016, 21:07

Hello,

Could someone tell me what was the best account of this Soviet counteroffensive launched on December 5th, 1941 to smash the German operation "Taifun", until at least March 1942?
I need English account, which can provide information to the corps level.

Thank you for your advices.
Cheers,

Greetings,

It’s not clear if you are looking for a German or Russian view of the battle. Also, the Red Army wasn’t using corps level formations very much at Moscow, mostly divisions, brigades and regiments.

These are the books I would try to find…but there are many more:

The Battle for Moscow - by David Stahel
Operation Typhoon - by David Stahel – German point of view, Good account right up to the counterattack.
Battle for Moscow: The 1942 Soviet General Staff Study - by Michael Parrish. I don’t have this one but should be very good!
The Road to Stalingrad – by John Erickson. Old but still good.
The Defense of Moscow – by Geoffrey Jukes. Old but still good.

I would also check this web site…most of it is in English. Good Maps in Russian but easy to understand.

Hope this helps.

Hello Dann,

Thank you for answering my question.
Actually, I did read the two Stahel's books you mentionned. Very good, but they stopped on December 5th, 1941! That's why I need the following part ;)

I want to read something like David Glantz's relation of the Battle of Smolensk, but concerning the Soviet counteroffensive. But I don't think such a terrific work exists yet. I prefer for a start a German point of view, but if there are some interesting Soviet accounts, it would be great too.

I noted Erickson and Jukes. I will probably buy one of them very soon.

Thanks again!
Cheers,

That's why I need the following part ;)
The retreat: Hitler's first defeat by Michael Jones fits perfectly!

This is excellent although it doesn't answer your question (depicts soviet forces redeploying):

Thanks,

I would try and find the:
Battle for Moscow: The 1942 Soviet General Staff Study

You can also look at Hitler Moves East By Paul Carell - Old but a nice general German view.

Hello,

I just bought Michael Jones' The Retreat: Hitler's first Defeat and Battle for Moscow: the 1942 Soviet General Staff Study.
I will come back to you the sooner, when I'll have read them, to tell you my opinion.
I thank you a lot for your advices. Very appreciated, as usual.

Cheers,

The Battle for Moscow by Albert Seaton?
Maybe a bit dated now but its cheap 2nd hand and covers the Soviet counter offensive.
