Model's Return to Ninth Army 1942

When did Model return to the command of Ninth Army in 1942 after being wounded in May?
Some sources have him directing Operation Seydlitz in July, some suggest that he returned on 10 August to deal with Zhukov's Rzhev offensive, and others that Vietinghoff was still in temporary command until the end of November.

"On 7 Aug. 1942 Model, returning from convalescent leave, again assumed command of Ninth Army; see Goerlitz, Model, 124-5". (Germany and the Second World War, vol. VI, p. 1003).

In KTB OKW he mentioned on 12 August, In Halder's diary - 17 August.

The exact date and time is difficult to determine from the records of AOK 9

KTB states that he had arrived in Smolensk on 07.08.1942. It also indicates that he met with his stand in (von Vietinghoff) and resumed command on 08.08.1942.
An order of the day from von Vietinghoff dated 08.08.1942 states that Model was resuming command
An order of the day from Model dated 09.08.1942 staes that he had resumed command
The activity log of the IIa states that he resumed command on 09.08.1942.

The best estimate is that he resumed command on 08.08.1942

In any case, von Vietinghoff went on leave on 12.08.1942 and was on leave throughout August and into September.

John
