Hello to all :D; the end..................

The 62 ID in 1942 - from Kharkov to Stalingrad.

1942.

With the 183 Infantry Regiment in Russia.

Retrograde struggles around Stalingrad. November-December 1942.

On December 21, 1942, in Popowka and Kaminskij, some 30 km west of Karginskaja, the GR 183 was blocked by hostile armored elements. Nevertheless the remnants of the regiment continued their retreat to Morossowskaja through extremely difficult terrain but suffering heavy losses in the process. On December 22, 1942 at Pokrowskij, fell in action the Divisional Commander, Generalmajor von Reuss, while trying to break through an enemy column. At the end of December 1942 the German forces could halt the Soviet advance around Morossowkaja. The men of the GR 179 suffered similar hardships during their retreat.

By January 1, 1943, the 62 ID was part of the XXIX. AK in the Armee-Gruppe Hollidt in the Heeresgruppe Don, which was deployed along the Donets in the sector Rubeshnyj, Ust- Bystrjanskaja, Baski and Kremenskoj.

Hello to all :D; here goes a new story.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

1. Towards the Don and Woronesh.

The 16 ID (Mot) commanded at that time by Generalleutnant Henrici, was holding the line Bogdanowka—Starodubzewo— Roschdestwenskoje—Pashojol—Wysche Oserka—Dubschtschiki—Matwejewka— Oserki in the early spring of 1942. On May 12, 1942 it was reinforced by the Pz Abt 116 (former I. / PR 1) and on May 19, 1942 had been relieved by the Hungarian 9th Light Infantry Division, marching toward a new assembly area south of Kursk.

On June 28, 1942 began the German offensive called "Operation Blue" and the 16 ID (Mot) as part of the XXXXVIII Pz Korps, was assigned the task of conquering the city of Woronesh on the banks of the River Don. The division crossed the Tim and started toward Stary-Oskol.

By July 6, 1942, the division had reached the west bank of the River Don, and after a promising start was engaged in bloody fighting house to house in the town of Woronesh until July 8, 1942 when it was relieved by a infantry division (it was the 57 ID).

Hello to all :D; more follwos.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

2. Towards the Caucasus.

On July 12, 1942 the 16 ID (Mot) marched towards the Caucasus into the rear of the main line of Soviet resistance.

In a chase of hundreds of kilometers between the Don and Donetsk, on July 26, 1942 the division crossed the river Don by Rasdorskaja and continued its progress towards the Manytsch, a major waterway that materialized the boundary between Europe and Asia. The 16 ID (Mot) crossed the Manytsch in Sporny, establishing a bridgehead there and later it was built a war's bridge. The Division was the first German unit which set foot in Asia.

Hello to all :D; more follwos.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

2. Towards the Caucasus.

In turn, on early August 1942 the LII AK under General Ott, composed of the 111 ID and 370 ID advanced along the river Manytsch, covering the flank of the 1 Pz Army, passed through the western regions of Kalmykia and reached the line Remontnoye - Elista - Ulan Erge. After consolidating the conquests and leaving garrisons in Elista and Ulan Erge, it continued southwards to join the Armored Army's attack.

On August 4, 1942, the 16 ID (Mot) continued towards the Kuban, it took Armavir and then crossed the Laba, reaching Maikop on August 10, 1942.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

2. Towards the Caucasus.

Then the division went to the Caucasus and the Black Sea by Abadsechskaja, reaching the limit of the oil region in Neftjanskaja. On August 12, 1942 Maj. Brede, Commander of Kradsch. Btl 165, was wounded in action; he was succeeded by Oberleutnant Schleicher. In turn Leutnant Schliep took over the Späh Komp.

On August 20, 1942 the division was relieved in place by the 101 Le. ID returning to Maikop. The 16 ID (Mot) remained in the area between Budenowsk and Woroschilowsk due to shortage of fuel, by order of the III Pz K had to give the fuel to the 13 Pz in order that this division can continue its advance. In Woroschilowsk (town of 15,000 inhabitants) the Company of light armored vehicles (Panzerspähwagen) proceeded to make repairs, taking advantage of the presence there of the Panzer-Instandsetzungswerkstatt 545.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

On August 23, 1942, it was received a radiogram from "very high" (Army Group) stating that the 16 ID (Mot) should fill the gap that lay between both Army Groups, ie between Stalingrad and the Caucasus through the implementation of mobile operations. The assigned ground was almost as big as the Netherlands and Belgium combined; the limit to the right was set in the valley of Manytsch to the confluence with the Kuma while the left boundary was the town of Yenotaevsk. The division marched from the Caucasus about 1000 kilometers to the new assigned area. The march continued for Elista, the capital of the Kalmucks, Ulan-Erge, Jaschkul, Utta and later still to Chalchuta. From this strong point should assure by various outposts the whole sector of responsibility of the division, along the road Elista - Astrakhan, in a West - East direction.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

Kampfgruppe Laroche.

On August 25, 1942, due to shortage of fuel, the 16 ID (Mot) was only able to organize a mobile battle group on the basis of the Kradsch. Btl 165; it was called Kampfgruppe Laroche and comprised the following units and subunits:

Kradschutzen Btl 165.
3. / Pz Jäg Abt 228
2 batteries of AR 146
additional elements.

At sunset this detachment reached Divnoe marching by Ipatovo, while the vanguard composed of a company of motorcyclists and the 3. / Pz Jäg Abt 228 continued until Elista without difficulty, relieving there some units of the 370 ID.

The Soviet forces had retreated eastward to occupy a defensive position on the western arm of the Volga on the line Sadoska (north of Astrakhan) - Zenzeli and the northwestern shore of the Caspian Sea.

August 26, 1942.

On August 26, 1942, the bulk of the Kampfgruppe Laroche arrived in Elista and waited there the arrival of the IR 60 (Mot), with that support it was strengthened the defense of the city. The Kampfgruppe Laroche reinforced now by the I. / IR 60 (Hauptmann Torley) went even further to the east and relieved the II. / IR 666 (370 ID) in Ulan Erge. Reconnaissance patrols reported hostile troops at sovkhoz Dolgan (18 km east of Ulan Erge). In Ulan Erge were buried the soldiers Koller and Schwarzinger of the 1. SpähKomp killed in a bombing during the trip.

August 27, 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

August 28, 1942.

The Kampfgruppe Laroche reinforced with the I. / IR 60 and the effective support of Hammon's artillery group, attacked and conquered the city and the oasis of Jaschkul beating the Russian garrison. By this action, which meant the occupation of the first Asian settlement on the Kalmyk steppe, Hauptmann Torley, who already had been awarded with the Knight's Cross was able to add the Oak Leaves and also the oasis was renamed "Oasis Torley" in his honor.

With the conquest of Jaschkul, the German troops entered within the heart of of a flat and arid region, with difficult climatic conditions and very different from Ukrainian's plains, fertile and with abundant waterways. Devoid of medium and high vegetation and lacking surface water resources, with the presence of dunes shaped by the strong wind prevailing from the north and northeast, where there were scarce water wells and roads.

But the Germans managed to overcome the obstacles with the help of the local nomadic population - the Kalmyks - a race of Mongol origin and largely Buddhists and animists who were forcibly gathered in agricultural kholkoz although traditionally engaged to animal husbandry.

Between late August and early September 1942, the 16 ID (Mot) consolidated its positions and mobile units were tasked in order to maintain liaison with the 4º Romanian Army to the north and Felmy Corps to the south; in the latter coexisted elements of various nationalities including: Turkish, Indian and middle Eastern Arabs.

Since late August 1942, the Kradsch. Btl 165 was assembled in Utta, oasis which had been conquered on August 31, 1942. In early September 1942, the battle group of IR 60 (Mot) moved further towards Astrakan, conquering the fortified oasis of Chalchuta.

3. Operations on the steppe.

From the base of operations in Utta, the Kradsch . Btl 165 carried out its long-distance patrols in the direction of the Caspian Sea and Astrakhan. On September 13, 1942 were sent four vehicle patrols under the command of Leutnant Schröder, Oberleutnant Gottlieb, Leutnant Schliep and Leutnant Hilger. The first patrol in charge of Leutnant Schröder, however was unlucky and in the first clash with the enemy, Schröder fell in action and were wounded Fw. Waismayer and the translator Maresch; the patrol returned to Utta.

Then Oberleutnant Euler took over, and the patrol left again on September 14. The patrols were composed up of volunteers and had the following organization: Patrol leader, messenger, driver and radio operator, a motorcyclist Platoon, a Platoon with 3 anti-tank guns, a squad of engineers and two light armored vehicles with 20 mm cannons; the logistical support consisted of 2 cistern trucks (water), 2 cistern trucks (fuel), a truck with supplies and a workshop truck.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

The task for those patrols was as follows:

I. Discover if and where the enemy is feeding forces into the gap between the Terek and the Volga, whether he is making attempts to cross the Volga, where enemy strongpoints are located, and if any troop movements can be located on the Stalingrad-Astrakhan shore road.

2. Carefully reconnoiter road conditions, the condition of the Caspian coast and the west bank of the Volga as well as the previously unknown Kizlyar-Astrakhan rail line.

The patrol led by Oberleutnant Gottlieb continued along the route to Astrakhan and when it reached Justa turned northeast. After traveling north-northeast across dunes and grassy areas of the steppe, reached the road Asthakhan - Stalingrad northwest of Lenino, there the Soviet trucks travelled toward Jenatewsk. The next day the patrol continued to Tschanyn Ulan and then headed to Sadowka; on September 16 (third day of the patrol) they were 5 kilometers west of Sadowka, 7 kilometers from the western branch of the Volga and 35 kilometers northwest of Astrakhan, from the nearby dunes the German soldiers could see the outskirts of the city and the margin of the Volga, before returning to Utta with two prisoners, a Russian officer and his assistant belonging to 36 Machine Gun Battalion of the Red Army.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

The patrol led by Leutnant Schliep turned toward the southeast of the route to Astrakhan with the task of finding out whether there was a railway line between Baku - Kizlyar - Astrakhan along the coast of the Caspian Sea or not. Schliep found the railway line on the second day of his patrol and managed to reach the station of Zenzeli with the light armored vehicles and the engineers group, there the Germans destroyed a train loaded with fuel coming from Baku and the interpreter answered a call from Astrakhan asking if they could dispatch the train from that location, but the insistence of the interpreter urging to dispatch the train alerted the Soviets who gave the alarm. The patrol tried to continue towards Bassy, but it was impossible and they came back towards Utta where it arrived on September 17, 1942.

The first stop of the patrol led by Oberleutnant Euler was Justa, some 70 kilometers north of Utta, the town was strongly occupied by the enemy. Then the fraction shifted to the east to Ohasyk. Until then there had been three contacts with the enemy: the first a column moving rapidly toward the German forces and proved to be a herd of antelopes of the taiga; the journey continued without incident until Burdshal when south of the source it was seen a truck with 14 Russians, when opening fire on the vehicle, it tried to escape but the motorcyclists were faster, one escaped and the rest were captured. Around 10 kilometers west of Ohasyk the column was attacked by three Il 2, losing a truck and a light vehicle.

3. Operations on the steppe.

Before Buka the patrol received fire from a Russian truck loaded with armed civilians from about 100 meters, after a counterattack one of them was captured and the rest fled in the vehicle. The second night elapsed some 5 kilometers east of Berkulte Schowgur. The next day, September 16, 1942, the trip went on another 5 kilometers until reaching ground impassable for vehicles other than Four-wheel drive. At 07:30 hours the patrol linked with a reconnaissance aircraft Fokke-Wulf.

On September 17, 1942 at 04:30 hours the patrols Gottlieb and Euler started together its return to Utta where they arrived at 12:00 hours after traveling about 400 kilometers in four days. There had been no casualties among the personnel, but it was inevitable that some vehicles suffered mechanical problems in the engine due to the sand of the desert and so some were sent yet to Woroschilowsk in order to be checked by the Panzerwerkstatt 545.

Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

4. In search of Panzerwerkstatt 545.

On September 18, 1942 at 04:00 hours marching westwards, 120 km to Elista; we got a drum of 100 liters of oil. The journey continued another 80 km westwards to Divnoje. Then another 180 kms to Woroschilowsk where we arrived on September 19, 1942, to know that the Panzerwerkstatt 545 had shifted towards the Caucasus.

We got oil for the engine and set off on September 20, 1942 to Kusawka, another 150 km. On the way we had a puncture and as we had no spare tire, we lock the wheel to avoid touching the ground and continued driving. During the trip we did not see a single soldier.

On September 21, 1942 we reached Kusewka and the supply route of the German Army in the Caucasus. As the 8x8 Panzerspähwagen now consumed as much oil as fuel, the engine gave up at last and we had to stop at a roadside. The workshop was at Georgiewsk, some 60 kms so I got a ride and came back the next day with a trailer; on September 22, 1942 the 8x8 vehicle was finally in the workshop. On the second day of the stay I had a fever and by the third day while I was delirious a comrade went looking for a doctor who gave me quinine and that helped a lot.
