IMPORTANT! Need assistance!
Just returned from holydays in Belarussia.
I've got an interesting paper from my grandma.
Brief translation:
Given by local KGB department, Gomel region, Belorussia.
In archive of KGB of Gomel region we have the next data:
------ Yevgeniya Ilyinichna, b. 1926 in village Osov, Hoiniki district, Polessk region
since June 1943 was forced to departure to Germany by German forces and she worked in village Vulverstadt (?).
In the April 1945 she was liberated by American forces.
In Germany she was togever with all family
father - Ilya Alexeevich, b. 1904
mother - Ekaterina Osipovna, b. 1907
sister - Lidiya, b. 1929
sister - Anna (my grandma), b. 1929
sister - Mariya, b. 1939
We have no data about possible crimes of thede people during WW2.
All of them were returned to Motherland in December 1945.
-------------------------------
So i have a request for German and American members - i want to know where is this place (My drandma said it was near city called Vashesleben (of course i can misspell the name) and which one American unit liberated them.

I have a friend (yes - just the one) and I asked him to look at this. He has a GREAT knowledge on this subject and studied in Russia for a while - His reply is this
Incidentally he was most interested in the form and will be making a copy for his Warsaw Pact Impression paperwork.
I hope this helps with the search.the place is deffo vulverstadt where she worked, but I have no idea where it is. This looks like a genuine doc from Belarus KGB (whish still exists today).
There is a Wulverstedt in Saxony, but I dunno about Vulverstadt? It may have changed names. Sorry I cannot help more mate.

I've poked around since Alex sent me this and there is indeed a place called Neuwegersleben near Wulferstedt... Tenuous link but there nevertheless... Indeed there are a great many towns named "leben" nearby - Oschersleben being the nearest to the one Oma named... It is also the largest town nearby... So maybe we have found it?
Find Magdeburg.
Come 22 miles West
Drop about 8 miles South.
There is Wulferstedt.
I do hope you have found the place in question...

Isn't this one? Pronunciations are very similar.Eugene (J. Baker) wrote:So i have a request for German and American members - i want to know where is this place (My drandma said it was near city called Vashesleben (of course i can misspell the name) and which one American unit liberated them.

Good work, I agree.
Some things are very logic. Yevgeniy wrote: Vulverstadt, V changes to W in German, and besides V is pronounced like F so Wulferstedt is very probable. He wrote Vashesleben and I've found a village called Neuwegersleben just 2 km north-west of Wulferstedt. Let's see: we add Neu, change V to W and remember Russians spell H as G and vice versa very often*, so we also change H to G and we have Neuwegersleben. Neu prefix could be added after the war. I think everything is VERY logic and take into consideration the fact Neuwegersleben is just 2 kilometres away from Wulferstedt, so it CANNOT be a coincidence.
My grandma was working in a village near Wernigerode (visible at the lower left corner of the map) and was also liberated by the Americans.
OK, here you have my source map:
http://www.uk.map24.com/
Choose Germany from the drop-down menu, input Wulferstedt in the city field and click Next. See Neuwegersleben is very close to Wulferstedt.
Regards,
Krzysiek

It is interesting how much the two of you have in common due to the war. I say this as an American whose family was not directly affected by the war. There is much about the European experience that I can't place in context, no matter how many books I read, without posts like these.
Very Best,
David
