Crashed P-40 just found in Egyptian desert

Postby Galahad on 24 Apr 2012 08:24

--Here are some photos of a crashed P-40 recently found in the Egyptian desert. See the post by desertjedi.

--It looks like a P-40E, based on the 6 wing-mounted guns and what looks like RAF markings. This was what the RAF called the Kittyhawk MK I. Earlier versions had two .50 calibers in the nose and four .303 calibers in the wings, or four .50 caliber guns in the wings.

--It's in pretty good condition, considering it's been sitting there for something like 70 years!

It's in amazing condition, the dry arid air obviously has inhibited its decomposition, looks like its salvageable even the batterys still intact hard to believe.

its probably worth several million dollars ,... and just sitting there in the desert , waiting to be found ..
i wonder if we will ever know what happened to the pilot ?
lets just hope greedy fools dont decide to haul her home , refurbish her , fill her with modern parts ,... get her flying again , only to crash and destroy her , like we have seen too many times ,
remember the kee bird ?

Oh man that Kee Bird fiasco!!! What a bunch of morons screwing things up. All that money and time wasted...

This P-40 looks like it has been picked clean, if you really look at pics. Lots of instruments, weapons missing already.

It was a controlled landing by the look of if, so the pilot may have survived, but unless he was picked up shortly after, judging by the isolation of the spot would have perished in a short time.
Notice the amount of rock in the area around the fuselage, Lucky landing or what! Of coarse there may have been a lot more sand at the time of the initial landing and has just eroded away. I would have expected the plane to be buried under sand from storms etc over the yrs.

I wonder if the radio was found like that, outside of the aircraft? I can imagine the poor pilot taking it out of the fuselage to try and repair it so he could call for help. I can also imagine him setting off on foot into the barren wasteland, never to be seen again, like the crew of the bomber 'Lady Be Good'. I hope that wasn't his fate.

The plane may have been buried in the past. But just as sand can be blown onto things, it can also be blown back off.

--Here's some more on the crashed P-40, with some new and large photos. AND some history on the plane, including the name of the man they think was the pilot. It seems the plane, which was damaged and couldn't retract its landing gear, was being flown to a rear depot for repairs and managed to disappear. The pilot seems to have made a crash landing and, based on the empty cockpit and the parachute next to the plane, survived--hundreds of desert miles from the nearest help--which would explain why the radio was on the ground next to the plane. R.I.P.

From the historical point of view, let's hope someone can save the plane before locals strip it for scrap.
