The British like illogical numberings because they can mystify and worry their enemies. The numbering and re-numbering of the 7th/6th/7th/70th Infantry Division is only one example. Keep your enemies guessing.

Well that is slightly different, since the UK regiment illogical numbers didn't change.

I do not know Indian Army history but would guess the 1st - 5th Raj Rifs Regiments had existed sometime since Clive of India.

They did, but they had a different numbering system until the reorganisation of 1922.

A great resource thank you. One question however - 1RF (1Fusiliers) shown twice. Once under 6Div Bagush Box and again under 4 IND DIV Sidi Haneish Area. Can anyone throw light on this?

Under the 6 Div the whole brigade was only temporarily attached and thus is also shown under 4 Ind Div where it would later be under command.

I found the OOB of the reformed WDF @ 22nd April in the CYRCOM/WDF War Diary. Does anyone want me to type it out and share? Its about 4 pages of detail and helps to place who was where including 7th Australian Divsion.
