#1

Post by David W » 22 Feb 2016, 23:20

What other major Heer HQ units existed in North Africa during 1941 & 1942?

5th Light/21st Panzer Division.
15th Panzer Division.
Afrika/90th Light Division.
164th Light Division.
Deutsches Afrika-Korps.

Thanks,
David.

Korück 556 - commander rear area 556, General Schmitt.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Thanks Urmel.

What function did it fulfil?

Was Panzer-Armee Afrika an HQ Unit, or just a title?

Forgot Panzergruppe, that was also a full HQ.

You need to define 'major'. I would not include any of Nuno's list other than Arko104 under 'major'.

Korück 556 was responsible for administration in the rear area, and in September 1941 General Schmitt took over the frontline command of Bardia which it held until the position surrendered on 2 Jan 1942. Not sure how much of his staff went with him.

I've got a note at the bottom here: https://rommelsriposte.com/2009/08/17/a ... nit-names/

Hi.

My definition would be Divisional or larger, so Arko 104 was what I took from Nuno's list.

When was "Panzergruppe" in use, and which units did it oversee.

Thanks.
David.

August 1941 to January 1942 when it became Panzerarmee. It controlled D.A.K. and XXI. C.A at first, and then during CRUSADER also CAM.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

I don't think that was built on normal KStN lines.
