History behind a movie - Japan 1800/1900

Hi,
Last night I looked a movie, never saw it completely, but I would like to know the real history behind it. It seems to be quite recent.
The time seems to be between 19th and 20th century. In some remote mountain area in Japan, there are family clans who compete for hunting areas and seems to collect skulls of killed enemies. The Japanes army enter and take control of of area, introducing police and postal service. Everything seems to develop in peace until a fight between a policeman and the family clan members leads to an attack to Japanese installation.
Any information where and when. Name of tribe. Name of the movie.
thanks in advance
