It took some time and a few good hints, but finally:
The Battle of the Nile, French ship-of-the-line L’Orient.
The poem is "Casabianca", by Mrs. Felicia Dorothea Hemans: "The boy stood on the burning deck / Whence all but he had fled; / The flame that lit the battle's wreck / Shone round him o'er the dead..."
