Not until now. They lasted FAR longer than the SS ever did.

The Marines were established on November 10, 1775. That gives them an approximate life span of 327 years. The SS had a life span of about 12 years. Out of the two most modern of the groups on the poll, the Marines are so far the most succesful, especially since they're still going.

You mean that they are a cohesive military unit composed entirely of a large number of Cossack. I thought that stopped after WWII.

If you consider the no. of kills to analyse then the best should to be Hannibal's army of 20000-25000 who defeated Roman army after army during their 15 years in the Ittalian main land, and to be in a Enemy land for 15 years with an Army of that size has to be an incredible achievement. And he defeated Roman armies in the range of 50000-75000 with his small army. Even in the WW11 Rommel used the Tacticts Hannibal used 2000 years ago, It has to be Hannibal and his army.
Also if you take the WW11 I think The Russian army deserves a place as well, during Barbarosa if it hadn't been for their courage and never give up attitude Russia would've fallen.
But out of the lot , I too vote for Waffen ss, they are the best out of this lot

If you are talking about single combat, why have the Samuraii been left out of this? This is too broad of a subject/discusssion it needs to be narrowed down. :? M.L. Anderson

If it's a case of single combat, I'll take the man with the gun to win.

I think the choices were too limited. We forgot many better options.

Roman Legions

The Grande Armee

The Spanish Tercios (I would vote them for patriotic reasons... :aliengray

The Army of Alexander the Great

The Spartan and Macedonian phalanxs

The Huns (the old ones...

The many posts about degrading the US Marines is funny. Obviously, you people have never dealt with them.

I've been in a number of mock combats with modern forces from different countries. The only indivdual soldiers or small teams I've ever had a hard time dealing with are Marine Snipers.

Rangers yes, what regiment I don't know.

I should restate though, I'm talking about soldiers that match up well against me personally, as oppossed to which soldiers match up well against each other.

The best trained soldiers of the world are all good. Equipment and money for training make a huge difference.

If I had to take a group of soldiers for a particular mission, the nature of that mission would determine what soldiers I took. If the mission were to kill me, I'd take Marine Snipers. I love hate those guys.

The coordination of the modern elite soldiers units is simply awesome. It's almost scary.

If I had to pick a larger group of soldiers as the worlds best, I'd pick the US aggressor units, including the ground people. The best in the world train against them, and they almost always win.
