Cold War documentary recommendations?

Postby Rivet on 10 Jun 2012 02:44

Perhaps a somewhat odd request. I'll be undergoing some minor surgery soon and will be in recovering of a period of a few days. So, I am getting my film materials lined up for those boring hours.

Could any of the contributors recommend some good Cold War documentaries to watch? Thank you very much. :)

I watched a good series of episodes called "The Cold War". There was for instance interviews with Castro, and a Russian said that after the fall of the USSR Russians were surprised at the great weaponry of the USA because they said that Russia had no intention of invading anyone, being far too busy with their own internal affairs.

Scope out the "Planes that never flew" series of documentaries - apart from the WWII Lockheed jet one, and the American SST one, the rest of the series is IIRC given over to Cold War-era military types. As "satellite" documentaries go they're also remarkably good as well as their historical content being excellent!

Try Cuba: An African Odyssey. It has two parts: the first deals with Che Guevara's failed mission to the Congo in 1965. The second examines Cuba's military intervention in Angola during the 1970s. It shows rare film footage and great interviews. The filmmaker is clearly a fan of the Cuban revolution but her bias is not onerous.

Viewed this recently. The South Africans kicked some Cuban arse. Portugese in Guinea-Bissau(?) got drubbed, too, and thankfully they got out after a coup(?) in the home country.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I've seen The Cold War and its excellent. Cuba: An African Odyssey sounds extremely interesting; thanks for the recommendation. Ditto Planes that Never Flew. I've watched a few of the latter and really enjoyed them.

Anywho, next month, surgery time. Oh well, more time on the web and watching history vids. :milwink:

The whole history of the world is summed up in the fact that, when nations are strong, they are not always just, and when they wish to be just, they are no longer strong. - Winston Churchill
