Warsaw Pact - Order of Battle during the Cold War

#1

Post by Galcom » 02 Jan 2015, 20:17

This topic is about Warsaw Pact's Air Forces Order of Battle. Since those information were confidential earlier a lot of false data is present in different sources. This topic's purpose is to clarify these details.

Excellent site Galcom. Thanks a bunch. The more info, the merrier. The Cold War was no joke. ... In 1978 (during the post-Vietnam disco era), the U.S.A.F. maintained a fighter-bomber base at Bentwaters England in the southeast of Britain. A squadron of F-4 Phantoms loaded with nukes were on constant alert. Pilots assigned to the aircraft preformed periodic operational checks. Maintenance made quick fixes. Whatever was needed to ensure "code 1" status was delivered almost instantly. ... Troops at R.A.F. Bentwaters were told that if tanks from the Warsaw Pact launched an offensive across the East-West demarcation line, U.S.A.F. fighter-bombers from Bentwaters would be delivering nukes within 18 minutes. Europe would have been worse than Iraq/Syria. ... Bentwaters was just one small base among many. ... ... The Cold War for America was like the Pyramids in Egypt: it was a government project that increased the grand total of wealth created (unlike foodstamps) and enabled small-business capitalism.

Thank you, Globalization41!

Yes, the Cold War was no joke. In addition to the Warsaw Pact bomber and fighter-bomber units, the tactical fighter were also used as a nuclear attack. In the eighties one of every regiment's squadrons was a nuclear bomber squadron. Lots of nuclear weapons were standing by. Fortunately, no one attacked. Hope no one will.
