According to Vietnam's Forgotten Army , Andrew Wiest, Jim Webb:

..this reaction baffled the North Vietnamese.Why did these men sacrifice all for a puppet nation?They asked Hue if these graduates of both Thu Duc and VNMA had been brainwashed during their training.Hue responded that it was not training but rather a devotion to Vietnam and a strong connection to the nation's martial past that had driven the officers to accept death over dishonor..
