Uboats in Volksmarine service
Recently read Len Deighton's 'Spy Story' and it mentioned East German/Polish (Pact era) U-boats-does this have any basis in fact?

The Volksmarine, no. Polish I dont know. The Volksmarine mostly trained and built for amphibious operations. Here is a late 80's organization:
16,300 sailors, 50% draftees. 131 surface ships (largest: frigate), 48 auxiliary craft, 12 amphibious vehicle landing ships. For amphibious operations, the Navy relied on the 28th and 29th Motor Rifles Regiments, which were trained extensively in amphibious techniques with special armored personnel carriers, the BTR-60PB.

The Polish Navy had at the end of the Cold War the Following Subs:
ORP Orzel (291) Soviet Kilo-Class Type. The name transaltes as Eagle. Appearently still in Service.
Wilk-Class Soviet Froxtrot-Class Type. In Service 1987-2003.
ORP Wilk (292). The Name translates as Wolf.
ORP Dzik (293). The Name translates as Boar.
