Post WW2 tanks

Between the Churchill and the Centurion, what was the better hull for AVRE and other specialised vehicles and which had the better overall battlefield mobility?

How do those features compare to the Conqueror and Chieftain...I have read that the Conqueror was slightly better than the Centurion in certain conditions - not specified what though.

Oh THAT's easy - the Centurion wins hands down! The Churchill had a noted hillclimbing ability compared to period equivalents - but the Centurion was fast and reliable in all conditions.

Also - with the Army starting to batten down the hatches and slowly retrench for the new peacetime era, adapting the new tank hull for specialised uses....I.E. the currently in production chassis/drivetrain...made more sense than one that ceased production at the end of May 1945!

Conqueror's an oddball indeed; it was slow, unreliable....but handled offroad just as well as the lighter Centurion - but I don't think it could ever becalled "better", just "as good as in certain circumstances"

Conquerer had a huge 120mm gun but with the arrival of the L7 105mm tank gun on Centurion was no longer needed. The Chieftain hull was used for dedicated bridgelayer tanks but not for the AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers). This remained a Centurion hull. Titan & Trojan based on the Challanger II hull are now in service with the british army.

Centurion and Cheiftain both had a "Tea Dispenser", The Challenger did not. The United States developed a better tank, with the M1 Abrams, which could cook a fine cup of coffee with its jet engine.

There were actually TWO Chieftain engineering versions - the FV4204 ARV/ARRV Armoured Recovery Vehicle, and the Chieftain AVRE Armoured Recovery and Repair Vehicle..."here's one we made earlier"

Sorry these are not in color. Dad was touring the British Zone of Occupation-Germany (good will tour) in 1958 and took these at their Kaserne. Centurions with and without skirts.
