In the united states army dress uniform the patch representing the individuals current unit of assignment is worn on the left sleeve while that of any unit in which he served in combat with is worn on the right sleeve. If you served in more than one unit it was possible to have uniforms with more than one patch. The First patch is that of the 11th Light Infantry Brigade which he was assigned when it was an independent unit, The second picture shows the patch of the 23rd "Americal" Infantry Division which absorbed the 11th and 4 other independent light infantry brigades to become for a while the largest US infantry division.
