Note: The U.S. trade deficit with China for July 2014 averaged about a billion bucks a day. Trade deficits equate to more food stamps paid for with less tax revenue collected. ... The U.S. option of policing the world requires wealth creation within America's borders as during WWII, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, the Marshall Plan, sending a man to the moon, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. ... Running massive trade deficits since the end of the Cold War and calling it "Free Trade" mathematically facilitates a shifting of U.S. foreign policy in the direction of isolationism due to economic weakness. ... Or, combining U.S. interventionism with massive trade deficits means military, political, and economic overextension.

Note: To counter excessive demands by labor unions, many manufactures eventually redistributed their wealth-creating factories away from U.S. soil. 5/12/1972, U.S. Unleashes War's Biggest Concentration of B-52s on North Vietnamese Troop Masses Besieging An Loc

Note: The 70 B-52s used to blunt the North Vietnamese offensive at An Loc would be almost equal to the total current U.S. B-52 inventory. There were about 744 B-52s originally built. ... During the Cold War, numerous B-52s were stationed Stateside under the control of Strategic Air Command (SAC) and rotated on alert status, fully loaded for nuclear war and ready for immediate launch. SAC noted its mission on the sign at the front gate of each bomber base stating "Peace is our Profession." Detachments of B-52s used for air support in defending South Vietnam were temporarily assigned to Pacific Air Command. Thus, Strategic Air Command never actually dropped any bombs in anger. ... Meanwhile, at the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing Headquarters in Thailand, where fighter-bombers launched round-the-clock missions supporting South Vietnamese ground units, the sign at the entrance said "Peace is not our Profession."

5/12/1972, Antiwar Protests Continue Across the Nation, Over 500 Arrested, Protesters Chain Themselves to Seats at U.N. Gallery

Note: Were it not for being blocked by the isolationists prior to WWII, Roosevelt would have entered the war prior to Pearl Harbor and would not have had the necessary political support to prosecute WWII to its logical conclusion. However, the power vacuums left by Hitler and Tojo were quickly filled by Stalin and Mao. ... The U.S. occupation of Japan's island homeland was difficult to subvert due to geography. The Soviets, who always adhered to standard Russian destabilization policies in border regions, were kept away from the Japanese mainland. Additionally, General MacArthur kept in power Emperor Hirohito who directed the Japanese to be polite and passive. ... The U.S. occupation of western Germany after WWII was made infinitely easier by routine Soviet mistreatment of POWs. The Germans were motivated into supporting a civilized U.S. occupation to counter the Soviet practice of barbarianism and bullying.

Less tax revenue from closed factories, combined with more food stamps required, resulted in less wealth available with which to meet requested teacher pay raises.

5/13/1972, U.S. Jets Hit Entire N. Viet Rail System, Siege Continues at An Loc, U.S. Marine Choppers Recommitted to War, Part 2

Note: Nixon inherited the Vietnam War in 1969. He had three basic options:
1. Provide air support to South Vietnam, most likely resulting in stalemate and permanent siege.
2. Attempt to win the war with U.S. ground troops, meaning permanent occupation, supplemented with socialism for South Vietnam, bankrolled by America.
3. Let Asians kill Asians.
... ... Fortunately for "Tricky Dick," the U.S. in 1972 still had plenty of firepower available for policing the world.
