Also, please notice the approximate correlation between the ethnic German eastern frontier in 800 on the map above and the maximum advance of the Red Army in 1945:

Do you know this Ostsiedlung era song?:

Naer Oostland willen wy ryden,
Naer Oostland willen wy me.
Daer isser en bessere stee.

Translation:

We want to ride to eastern lands.
We want together to eastern lands.
Where a better life awaits us.

Modern performance:

There are words which carry the presage of defeat. Defence is such a word. What is the result of an even victorious defence? The next attempt of imposing it to that weaker, defender. The attacker, despite temporary setback, feels the master of situation.

No, I don't. :( Indeed, do you know exactly how old that song is, Peter?

Nope, I don't know how old exactly, but probably from the 12th or 13th centuries.

Of course there exist several versions, since later it was modified.

I'm not sure which version is the singer in that video singing.

It's a Dutch/Flemish song first published in the Antwerps Liedboek (Antwerp songbook) of 1544, according to Wikipedia. German versions came later.

Most of German-speaking population to the east of the Oder-Neisse had Slavic and Baltic ancestry.

I think haplogroup frequencies show this clearly (when contrasted with those in "Alt-Deutschland"):

DNA from pre-war inhabitants of Silesia: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... t132930698

R1a = 54% of SIlesians (maybe a bit less due to overrepresentation of Upper Silesians in this sample):

^ If we apply the historical line of divide, we can see lower % of R1a in Lower Silesia (as expected):

Upper Silesia - 48 samples of which 30 R1a = 62,5%
Lower Silesia - 48 samples of which 23 R1a = 47,9%

However:

Grünberg region - 11 samples of which 4 R1a = 36,4%
Rest of Lower Silesia - 37 samples of which 19 R1a = 51,4%

DNA from pre-war inhabitants of East Prussia: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... t132605394

R1a (indicating either Slavic or Baltic origin) = 44% of East Prussians and N1c (Baltic origin) = 24%:

Both regions combined:

By comparison here a map showing modern frequencies (i.e. post-1945 frequencies) of R1a:

In "genuinely German" (not only by language, but also by ancestry) areas, R1a is in minority:

Sampling locations for present-day frequencies (Münster has only 7,8% and Mainz only 8,4%):
