Slovenian war of Independence 1991

I don't know, how good you know what happend in Slovenia during it's independence war in 1991.

I'll post some facts about it and if there is any interest I'll post some more. :D

The war started on 27.6.1991, when JLA (Jugoslovanska ljudska armada - Yugoslav People's Army YPA) lounched attacks against TORS (Teritorialna obramba Republike Slovenije - Territorial Defence of Republick of Slovenia) and Slovenian Police (Milicija at that time). The primaraly goal was to secure boarder passes to Austria, Hungary and Italy. But the first shots were fired already a day before, on 26.6. at 14.30 at Divača. The fights stoped on 7.7.1991; because of this is this war known as Ten-Days war.

At begining of war TO had (on 26.6.1991) 15.707:
- 85 groups for interference,
- 92 groups for AT fight,
- 59 Detachments,
- 240 platoons,
- 150 Companies,
- 60 Detachments (like Abteilung) - Odred in Slovene.
Weapons:
- 39.000 pieces of Inf.weapons,
- 17.000.000 pieces of ammo for Inf. weapons,
- 1100 pieces of AT weapons with 2750 pieces of ammo for them,
- 200 support weapons,
- 100 AA rockets
- no armor, no aircrafts (planes or helicopters)

JLA had at that time 15.000 - 20.000 soldiers and CO, but in combat they used:
- 3 Armor-Btl. with 31 M-84 tanks, 10 AFV and 250 soldiers,
- 4 Armor Btl. with 31 T-55 tanks, 12 APC and 300 soldiers,
- 1 Mehanized Btl. (like Pz.Gren.) with 31 AFV and 450 soldiers,
- 1 Motorized Btl. with 700 soldiers,
- 1 Mountain Btl. with 600 soldiers,
- 1 mixed AT division (Divizion - a unit formed from 3-4 Bat.) with 24 Armored vehicles and 200 soldiers
- 1 fighter/bomb. Escadron with 12-15 planes (MIG-21, Galeb and Orel)
- 1 Hel. Escadron with 18-20 Helicopters

JLA claimed that TO had captured:
- 6.787 pieces of Inf. weapons,
- 87 Art. pieces,
- 124 AA pieces,
- 8 AFC,
- 31 tanks,
- 1 Ing. vehicle,
- 133 non-combat vehicles,
- 753 radios,
- 6.787 pieces for Anti nuclear/bio warfare,
- 144 dogs
- + equipment, food,...

If there is any interest, I'll post some more info.

I was blocked at Fernetti Pass. I never realized there was a war till I was obliged to turn back towards Trieste: just off the main road Italian army silently placed a lot of camouflaged PAKs units. Helycopters and planes were low-flying as much quickly as much they could in any direction, tanks were hidden just out small towns. I understood there was a war only when I heard the sound of cannons and high columns of smoke climbing high just looking towards Yugo border, ambulances were running in any direction. Un gran casino.

Slovenes must be considered the luckiest from all the republics (along with Macedonia) that broke off since the war against Slovenia lasted less than 2 weeks compared to the more than a year bloody wars in Croatia and Bosnia.

Ten days we were at war. The main difference between us and Croatia and BiH is that:
- here wasn't so large number of Serb folk; we don't have here their minority,
- TO had the initiative
- they used a system of blocades. They blocked JLA's barracks, so that they couldn't get out and developt their combat. If they broke through, another blocade, was built with help of Police, TO, civilist's, transportation services (bus's, trucks, ...).

In Croatia they didn't blocked the barracks, so that JLA could go out and used their weapons against Croats and their was actual front. Here in Slovenia were just baricades.

For our non-Slovenian/Yugoslav members:
JLA had 44 KIA and 146 WIA (Wounded in action), Slovenia 19 KIA (TO + Police) and 182 WIA. Also there were 12 foreign citizents (sp) killed during the war (all by JLA).

4693 JLA soldiers and 252 federal police-officers were caught or they defected/deserted.

Wow, that's a large number of captured and deserters if you ask me for such a short period of conflict. I guess they knew life would be better for them in Slovenia

Yes, indeed.

But you must be aware, that most of this soldiers were Slovene, then Croats, some Albanian, Macedonians and even some Serbs.

Up to that point the Army was a Yugoslav one composed of soldiers from every region in it so it would be common sense that all those nationalities were present.

If you want, I can post some figures, how Yugoslav JLA's officers corps was composed by nationality.
