That debate was pretty interesting in the old forum. So let's do it again. My choice is the Waffen-SS.

Waffen SS (A HAVE TO for anyone who knows ANYTHING about war!!!)
But I also have to choose Vikings and Cossaks!
US marines dont deserve to be on that list.

Waffen SS vs Vikings, who will win?
Rifles and SMGs vs bows and swords, gee that's a tough one.
In my opinion there can be no comparisson between armies of different ages.

This is a little silly. What is the basis for a comparaison? The achievements? Then the answer can be only one: the Mongols :!:
They created the largest land empire in the world. Ever.

In the old forum the Waffen SS win the poll. There dedication, combativity, courage make them the greatest soldier of all time. Of course we could say that for the others but the Waffen have an edge on everybody i think.

About the U.S. Marines. Annapolis is a great military school and make them great soldier so they deserve to be on the list.

Danes were Vikings too right Ferdinand:-)

The Russian soldier always was distinguished by special persistence, iron character, and the ability to survive the minimum of support . During the second world war it became obvious, that the Soviet Supreme command has high abilities in the field of strategy. It would be correct to expect in the further from the Soviet commanders and Soviet armies the high level of combat training and high moral spirit and we should at least try to provide even equivalent preparation of our own officers and the soldier. Obedience is peculiar to Russian generals and soldiers. They did not lose presence of mind even in hardest of conditions of 1941. The history of all wars speaks about their persistence. It is necessary for us to bring up the same hardness and persistence in our soldiers. Disregarding this area can result in awful consequences.

Yes Oleg,I do agree that some special mention must be made of Russian soldiers.
As for others,of course we cant put men with clubs against men with guns, but its measuring combat toughness, courage and the sort.THe Mongols were good, but you must remember that Europe/Russia was very weak at that time and very divided.
The US Marines dont deserve to be on that list Benoit, they are nothing special. How about these to take their place...
Fallschirmjager.
Brandenburger.
Soviet Guards.
French Paras.
Free Poles.
Soviet Spetsnaz.
Ghurkas.
SAS.
Indian special mountain troops.
Gebirgsjager
Medieval Polish Cavalry.
Napoleons French soldiers.
