Airborne

Post by Bad Tolz » 24 Mar 2002, 07:54

THe American Airborne soldiers of WW2 were nowhere near the calibre of their British allies.
The Fallschirmjager were the finest airborne troops of the period though, even better than the Brits one must honestly say.Strong in both attack and defense, they could also fight in any terrain. The British equivalent was also very strong in defense, but not quite as much "elan" in attack.

You guys are forgetting the finest soldiers of all time! The "Karoliner", the soldiers of Charles the XII!!! They managed to defeat a russian army of 30 000 men with only 10 000 men at Narva.

Waffen-SS

Post by Hannibal » 24 Mar 2002, 21:24

Please tell me why do think Waffen-SS deserves the title? They always had the best equipment, the best supplies, but they were totally useless in the battlefield. Let's take, for example, the Ardennes in 1944: "Sepp" Dietrich's 6. SS Panzer Army moved about 40 km throughout all the campaign, and they were to be the main force to crush the Allies. They knew nothing about fighting, thier commanders were former criminalists, lawyers, doctors, butchers (Dietrich!), etc.. They specialized in massive executions of defensless people. How can you call them "The greatest soldiers of all time"???

Not that I think that the Waffen-SS were the best soldiers of all time, but I suppose you have some hard facts to back that statement?

Members,

I am amazed that no one has mentioned the Roman Legionaire. Surely the ones that dominated the known world for about 300+ years must be up there near the top.

Best Soldiers of All Times

Not because I'm Italian, but leaving the Romans out looks kind of funny.
One of the largest and somehow civilized empires wasn't achieved through peanut butter or oceanic parades...

And what about the Persians ?
And why not take into account the Greeks with Alexander the Great who, definitely, was not second to none.

I guess that poll needs some adjustments, friends

Angelo

Oh, I was almost forgetting the British. Even in their case, the empire was no tiny thing, huh ?

Wish I could see the French too, even though I'm not a fan about them.

You can have another poll if you want and had your choice. About the French, the Germans considered them the best soldiers after World War I and that i completely disagree. They can thanks the Canadians and the Americans for the victory...

LOL, ok, Benoit

I'm just thinking it over...

Maybe, it's better we wait till this one is filed lest someone might think we are out to hire the best of those armies to give it a try once more (I mean, to conquer the world)

Given the options...

I would have to say W-SS. However, I can think of other soldiers that deservethe title, but the absolute "best of all time" would be really hard to come by.

Deer Hannibal, not that I think that the Waffen-SS were the best soldiers but the had some advantages(in my view) over the allies:
High morale
Prepared to die for their "cause"
Better trained
Better tactics

and Hannibal it´s a BIG difference between W-SS and Allgemeine-SS(They took care of executions of defensless people)
