Due to this I Btn was ordered to sweep the terrain W of the main road from Maisula. II Btn supply ws ordered to secure the terrain at “Metsänvartija” from SW to NE. Jaeger ptn/JR4 was ordered to sweep both sides of the main road starting from “Metsänvartija”.

15.00hrs Radio message from Lt Heikkilä:
“Due to thunderstorm only the following findings:

16.00hrs Maj. Gahnström reported to Col. Simelius that he had taken over II/JR4 from Capt Tenho with some remarks.
17.30hrs Situation report to 8.D HQ:
Enemy moving about in 5550, 9320 terrain. Heikkilä: radio message at 17.00hrs ”Hovilampi 108 camp. Road Korpijärvi – to NW lots of automobiles.”

18.30hrs Jaeger patrol led by Lt Vainionmäki returned from the chase of Russki patrol. Nothing found. Road securing pulled back, also sweeping units. Instead the isthmuses E of Siira crossroads shall remain secured .

What on earth happened there? Captain Tenho barely had time to pack his bags and say goodbye. :)

Prisoner catching patrol to “Kannas” (1+6) bumped at a new Russki sentry post. No prisoners caught. The patrol took mortar fire when retreating ( 10 bombs)
At 04.20hrs Russki patrol of 10 men approached Pt.112 from SE. Having seen our men they retreated. They did not open fire.

At Saapas: 24.00-03.00 intense infantry fire
At Kannas: From the SW tip bearing 37-30 MG and LMG fire (0.20-01,00). At the same spot two Russkies fixing up their positions.
At Kettu: 10pcs light mortar bombs and 2 heavy ones ahead of the trench.

Patrolling:
At 23 hrs Recce patrols set out from “Lampi” and “Suo” for the terrain in front of their positions. Preparing fot prisoner catching mission next night.
Russki is extremely vigilant.
Our ambush patrol SE of Pt.112 terrain abt 1 km out 20-00-03.00hrs. No results.

28.7.1944_
00.30hrs Report from II Btn:
The prisoner catching patrol 1+3 that set out at 21.00hrs succeeded in taking a prisoner in “Sukka” terrain at 00.00hrs . At the same time the Russki was found to be grouping in front of Puro and Saapas. Our artillery fired barrages at the both locations. The abovementioned patrol Onali killed 7 Russkies.
01.45hrs Report from III Btn:
The patrol 1+4+34 advanced from Pt. 112 to S for one km. Their task was to catch a prisoner in the patch of forest at NE shore of Saarijärvi. The patrol was involved in a lively firefight and no prisoner was taken. Our casualties 9 wounded.
05.30hrs Situation report to 8.D HQ:
At 23.50hrs it was found that the enemy had concentrated one and a half Coys in front of both Puro and Saapas. Our artillery , mortar and infantry arms fire repelled the Russki. In front of Saapas the Russki employed a flamethrower. Russki covered their withdrawal with mortar barrages.

At Lampi: 22.00-01.00hrs a total of 18 shells
At Suo: 23.00-23.40hrs 50 shells
At Tie: 21.30-23.50hrs 110 shells
At Kannas 22.10-01.00hrs 80 shells

Our 120 mortar fired 56 rds

Patrolling:
21.00-00.30hrs Our patrol 1+3 set out from “suo” and reached “Suunnikas”, in its W edge where 7 Russkies were at f.f.work and one guarding. The seven were taken out but the guard escaped but he was caught. This comrade did not surrender until he was cut up a little. The Russki is from 4/340/Tyk.KKP.
21.00-02.00hrs Our patrol patrol 1+4+34 on prisoner catching mission tried to reach the patch of forest at NE shore of Saarijärvi. The patrol arrived at the SE side where they attempted to enter but was received y very intense infantry arms fire. The attempt failed. Our casualties 9 wounded.
03.00hrs Long distance patrol Heikkilä arrived and passed the 11.Coy section. The patrol was reconnoitring for six days at the Loimola-Käsnäselkä road in the terrain between the road and the front line. Patrol strength was 1+1+4.
The I Btn patrol that set out on 26.7. at 21 hrs did not return yet

At 06.00 returned the I Btn prisoner catching patrol that had set out on 256.7.at 21.00hrs. No prisoner caught. At terrain 5950, 9250 encountered a Russki phone cable. It was tapped and found to be old. The phone cables found last night by Heikkilä's patrol at the terrain 5300, 9400 shall be wiretapped next night.

21.00hrs A GHQ Long distance patrol leader visited our Rgt enquiring about the Russki securing in front of III Batn. They shall set out next night before midnight (1+8) from the section of III Btn.
21.40hrs Report forn I Btn Salonen/Olsson :
Yesterday at 113-14hrs a Russki messenger dog ran through our line to the Russki lines on the section of 8.Coy. The dog was shot at but missed.

Aslo a recce patrol was out, findings later.
At 00.05hrs Russki 6 man patrol in front of “Saapas”. Repelled by inf.fire. When retreating the patrol hit a minefield judging by explosions and shouting.

At 06.00 and 12.20 2 Russki AC:s (P-39 ? Tr.rem.) strafed the crossroads of Siira-Loimola. At 5-8hrs several overflights from S to N.

Excellent, thanks for another interesting instalment! Speaking of patrols. Is there ever any mention of which soldiers went out? Only the patrol leader seems to be mentioned in the diaries I've seen.

At Ahvenjärvi section inf. Arms fire more lively than usually

At “Puro”, explosion bearing 26-00.
In front of Saapas intermittent f.f. Work
At “Suo”, bearing 29-00 several explosions.

Traffic
at 23-24hrs in front of “Tie” constant clanking of carts and buzzing of automobiles several times
at 21.00hrs at “Kannas” bearing 33-00 buzzing of automobile back and forth.

Propaganda
At 02.30hrs Russki loudspeaker transmission. Bad audio quality.

Patrolling:
Our recce patrol 1+0+4 out from “Tukki” at 22.00-01.?hrs.
Spotted from “Hyrrä” a Russki patrol on the move at 03.30hrs on the far side of Uuksunjoki river on no-man's-land..
At 20.15hrs 8 – 9 aircraft landed at Uomaa airfield.

Our aircraft has fallen in front of “Korpi” section at 04.40hrs. Four parachutes were seen emerging. One of the men already managed to reach our side. The rest is expected.

At 05.30hrs at Kannas bearing 29-00 engine buzzing from E to W and back
At 10.00hrs in the middle of “Suunnikas”about 100m from the edge of the forest a column of smoke.

18.00hrs 2nd Lts Laurikainen and Ravantaa (?) reported as transferred to III Btn as mortar officers in JR4.
18.35hrs Russki ground attack plane fell down at 200m N of Ahvenjärvi N shore. The plane survived quite whole. The airmen were killed. Maps were secured.
19.30hrs Phone wiretapping revealed that Russki has detected our long range patrol (GHQ) E of Himatsuo (S) and taking action to destroy them.
20.15hrs 2nd Lt. Tanskanen (+17 men) received orders to guide the said long range patrol over to our side from the enemy rear.
21.45hrs Wiretapping revealed that Russki has placed 6 men in front of the long range patrol while 60 men are encircling them. The enemies have a phone connection with each other.
21.55hrs Commander reported this information to Col.Lt. Pietarinen in 8.D.HQ.
22.30hrs Order from 8.D:HQ: Kääriäinen/Simelius :
Prepare to send 2 platoons to support the platoon of 2nd Lt Tanskanen.
22.55hrs Order to III Btn Simelius/Hannula :
2 platoons must be set in readiness in the terrain of “5” to set out to help 2nd Lt Tanskanen if necessary.
Due to darkness patrols can no more be sent out to avoid confusion.
22.40hrs 2nd Lt. Raudin (?) reported having returned from hospital. He was wounded in Pultsoila.
