Finnish memorials

We've added a small section on Finnish memorials to the AHF Factbook and I'd appreciate any additions you might have with images or information on these or other Finnish memorials. You can either post it here or send it to me at webmaster@skalman.nu

Thanks.

Yes, great project - also in that sense that I guess there are thousands of war memorials in Finland and abroad.

True, it can potentially be very large but that would only be a good thing as most of the visitors will not have the chance to see these memorials in real life.

If I may add a caption to one of the photos of the link in the first post, taken at Hietaniemi cemetery (Sandudds begravningsplats) in Helsinki by Juho Ojala.

The second one from the top (the cross bound by stones on both sides, and a ring in the crossing as you would see around the bars of a prison's window) is a monument for Finnish POW's who died while in captivity.

I will post some photos of familiar monuments at Hietaniemi cemetery of Helsinki, taken in somewhat different lighting conditions this time.

This memorial stone stirred some controversy at the AHF earlier this year:

aseveljet.jpg

The text is as follows:

ISÄNMAAN VAPAUDEN PUOLESTA
VUOSINA 1941-43
SAKSAN SOTAVOIMISSA
KAATUNEITTEN SUOMALAISTEN
VAPAAEHTOISTEN MUISTOKSI

ASEVELJET

What do you make of this?

It translates into English as

TO THE MEMORY OF FINNISH VOLUNTEERS
FALLEN FOR THE FREEDOM OF FATHERLAND
IN THE GERMAN ARMED FORCES
DURING THE YEARS 1941-43

BROTHERS IN ARMS

(For grammatic reasons, the order of words becomes different in English.)

The monuments remembers the Finnish fallen of the Finnisches Freiwilligen-Bataillon der Waffen-SS.

A plaque in Turku to commemorate the Winter War bombing of "Surprise Monday" on 29 January 1940, when the air alarm was delayed. The plaque was attached on 13 March 1986 and the additional plaque in 2011. 29 people were killed in the region of the Post House shelter, but the total number of victims of the air raid was 38.
