Martti, thank you very much for putting all these links together.

Now, sligthly off topic, but definitively of high value if anyone of you are planning a trip to visit any of the old locations.

I have just been pointed out as how to add digital maps on top of Google Earth view, and then observe them while changing their transparency.

As a result, you will have the simultaneous ability to observe any location as how it is now (the Google Earth view), or how it looked at the time when the map was made.

This is how it is done:

1) Obtain a copy of the original map, for an example from any source mentioned above. For an example: http://mapy.mk.cvut.cz/data/Finsko-Finl ... 0/4023.jpg
2) Open Google Earth (the application, not the browser extension)
3) Activate the Ruler tool (Näytä viivain) icon on Google Earth and have the ruler available for the next step.
4) Choose "Add" the "Layer or Layout picture" (Lisää - Peittokuva). This will open a dialog for selecting the map (jpg) from your hard disk
5) While the dialog box is still open, resize the map to proper size. The ruler tool can help with this. Then position it correctly to match the Google Earth location
6) After this has been done, save the view with a proper name, ie "Kuuterselkä 1938". The view becomes available in Places (Paikat) menu on the left side.
7) Then, in this case, select "Kuuterselkä 1938" from "Places". When activated, there will be a slider available to change the transparency of the map you just added. You can use the transparency slider to make the map invisible for viewing Google Earth, and then sliding it less transparent for viewing the contemporary map of the time.
8) You can add several layers, and play with each of their transparency. For an example if you have a more detailed view of let us say a certain town or place, you can add that map as well.
9) You can now simultaneously view Google Earth, the high scale map, or the detailed map.

This all sounds very complicated but it really is not.

If interested, PM me with your email address and I can mail you the Kuuterselkä map as a Google Earth kmz file, it will immediately appear on top of Kuuterselkä area. After seeing it, you will understand what this is about.

Again, my aplogies for being slightly off-topic, but I believe this is truly a nice way to plan a trip, or to just observe as how the area looked "then" versus "now".

"Ääninen: Purjehdusseloste" (1942). It's an interesting book containing detailed information and even some maps needed to navigate through Äänisjärvi or Lake Onega. You won't find it easily as the only two copy I'm aware of are located at MPKK's (Finnish National Defence University) library at Helsinki. The "Merikarttalaitos" also published a book on Syväri / River Svir.

Great collection of documents, I apreciate your work digging through the archives.

A useful thing I've noticed is that if you replace the first part of the address with http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid= you get a somewhat nicer interface that is zoomable and you also get a button where you can download a highresolution copy of the scanned image with a filename that actually makes sense.

That is true, but what is also true is that the newer interface is slower to load the photograph since it does not show it before it is 100% done. Thus if you own a slow connection (like I do) you might prefer the old one which allows you to see parts of the photograph as it downloads. If you want to save the photo then it is better to use the download link at the new interface.

Trying to find maps between Paanajärvi-Salla.
Maps under 6.D are allready clear, but is there anything about 169th D and SS Nord, specially 1941?

The National Archive have started to digitize their collection of Soviet 1:100 000 maps from East Karelia. The first one to be digitized is Q-36-138 (see the map grid from the first post).
