Not being a Navy person, but...

I'm not a navy man, but the official and I think mostly used term for First Officer or in USN Executive Officer was simply "Ensimmäinen upseeri".
Perhaps "Perämies" would be the one Nigel is after.

Hmmm... perhaps "Käskystä, herra....!" would fit.

"Försti" was perämies on a merchant ship, but I think he was ensimmäinen upseeri in the navy.

'Försti' is a more than a tad informal title. Sort of like 'skipper' (but for a different role ofc) might be used in English. But it is still used in the Finnish Navy.

Also, you wouldn't add 'Herra <rank in Finnish>' to every statement or reply - like to a maneuvering order. Often only reply would be merely repeating the order.

Yes, at quick search that seems/used to be the correct official term in the Navy.

Of course not to every reply.
Your example as well as quick combat environment AFAIK the "herra" was/is not that often used
A lot also depending how formal the situation where the order was given and how "close" relations the persons had.

Hard to say often or not, but a lot depending about the type of the order.

Reason I was asking was in the British & Commonwealth Navies, the usual response to an order when in action is to repeat it word for word to make sure there's been no misunderstanding. Just wanted to make sure it was roughly the same in the Finnish Navy. The Navy always been different from the Army & the Air Force....

Referring to the earlier discussion on motorised sleds, there were also a few sleds pulled by a motorcycle that were used to move personnel and supplies between logging camps in Lapland during the 1930s and 1940s.

A question on bespoke tailors in the 1930s

#144

Post by CanKiwi2 » 22 May 2014, 01:44

Now here's an obscure question (I think). If you were an officer from a fairly well-to-do background and you wanted a tailor-made uniform from a bespoke tailors in the 1930's, what tailor would you use. I came across a reference to the Rahikainen family as famous bespoke tailors from Helsinki in the 1930's but thats all I can track down. The other bespoke tailors I can find online all seem to be rather more recent.

In 1924 Armeijan Pukimo started to make official uniforms for cadres. Just before the Winter war it was renamed Valtion Pukutehdas. Because cadres had to pay for their uniforms, with state subvention, they were very well taylored by measures.
Of course some wealthy officer might make their uniforms e.a. in Kuusinen Oy.
Armeijan Pukimo:
