On p. 294 the book states:

However, recent research by the this author indicate that the total losses of the Soviet Air Forces amount to at least 980 aircraft, of which the Red Army Air Forces (VVS RKKA) losses amount to at least 880 aircraft. About half of these tremendous losses are apparently direct combat losses, and the rest are results of accidents, losses of orientation, low weather etc. At least 770 (perhaps over 810?) of the Red Army Air Forces aircraft were destroyed or written off. At least 27 aircraft went missing, and at least 30 aircraft were sent for factory repairs, and some 20 aircraft were correspondingly dispatched to field repair depots for lengthy reparation of combat damages.

Thus total Soviet aircraft losses amount to at least 640 aircraft, of which almost 400 were combat losses, and some 895 aviators, of which 789 Soviet aviators were killed, and 106 taken prisoner. [...] In addition at least some 20 mechanics and other ground personnel were killed in various accidents.
