Re: Finland at War
The dates are from Australian news sources. Australia is to the west of the International Dateline, which begins the day and runs through the Pacific. For example, news of Pearl Harbor in America would be 12/7/1941. In Australia, the date would be 12/8/1941. If an article from Europe printed in Australia newspapers gives a dateline, then I'll go with the dateline. If there's no dateline, then I go with the date of the newspaper. For example, an article from London might get a dateline of 12/1/1939. The news it covers might be 11/30/1939. The Australian newspaper it's printed in might be dated 12/2/1939. In that case I use the 12/1/1939 dateline, which may have already been converted to Australian time when originally sent to Australia. ... Essentially, most links are usually a day ahead of the actual historical date due to Australia time.

I think those are clear to majority of us.Globalization41 wrote:The dates are from Australian news sources. Australia is to the west of the International Dateline, which begins the day and runs through the Pacific.
Yes, they do not match with the time the events mentioned took place nor with the time the newspapers mentioned were published.Globalization41 wrote:Essentially, most links are usually a day ahead of the actual historical date due to Australia time.
However I do understand your point too, but perhaps that should (have been)/ be better explained there from the beginning.

The above linked-to article leaves the impression that attacking troops were “bewildered” by camouflaged Finns. However, these operations may also have been human-wave attacks motivated by rear-echelon Soviet security blocking forces. Red Army troops were more likely motivated by the machinegun-fire-from-behind technique, whereas, for example, Japanese suicidal frontal assaults were motivated by an ideological cult-like love of Emperor Hirohito. … Earlier in 1939, in August, Red Army formations steamrolled through overextended Japanese occupation forces in East Asia. These successful operations enhanced Stalin’s overconfidence, resulting in a contributing factor to the decision by Stalin to invade Finland. … The Red Army purges of upper-level officers in 1937 consolidated Stalin’s hold on power, but decreased the operational efficiency of the Red Army, which was magnified by the disastrous Finnish campaign. Stalin became more cautious, but still remained overconfident. He concluded he needed at least until 1943 for the Red Army to reach the efficiency levels he desired. He hoped Hitler would bog down against France and later in Yugoslavia and Greece. As the danger from Hitler became more and more apparent after France, Yugoslavia, and Greece surrendered quicker than expected, Stalin increased his appeasement of Germany proportionally. … Meanwhile, to increase the Red Army’s operational and logistical capabilities, Stalin released some of the surviving Red Army officers from prison camps. Some of these officers euphemistically described their transfer back to active duty as, returning from a long and dangerous mission.

World War II created a labor shortage in America. Management was required to compete for labor, resulting in better production efficiency.
